110 grain vmax in 270

I used to reload but sold my stuff . Anyway, I just bought a rem 700 BDL in 270 and have a friend who is going to help work up a good load with me. He has brass, primers, and several powders all I need is the bullets. I have 200 110gr vmax bullets from days gone by I can use. These will be for deer more than anything besides targets. Question is will these be sufficient for 200 or maybe 300 yds on deer or should I come off the money for 130 or 150??? Anyone know a good load I could start from?

The Hornady V-Max bullets are varmint bullets.  These bullets are not intended for the taking of big game, only varmints or perfect for paper punching.  If you shoot a deer with this bullet, most likely you will have a nasty surface wound and the animal will suffer.

I suggest a Hornady 130, 140 or 150 grain Interlock bullet with slow burning rifle powder and standard primers.  If you want to sell the bullets to recover the money this is the right site for that too, or trade for some big game bullets.

My Ruger M77 MKII in 270 Winchester with Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm scope loves 54.0 grains of IMR-4831 and Hornady 150 grain Interlock bullets, extreme MOA accuracy everytime, without any modifications from the factory to include the trigger.  What ever bullet and powder you chose, please carefully work up the loads from minimum and do not disobey the maximum load data.

I would not recommend using the V-Max for deer.  Like yooper77 stated, these are for varmints and paper.  You would not get penetration from these.  I would rather use a .223 than that combo.

I like the looks of the interlocks with super shock tips and will try to do some swapping at my gunshop tomorrow if they will. If not maybe I will try to swap on this site. I have killed several with 22-250 shooting vmax but all were head and neck shots with massive damage, never tried chest shots. Anymore opinions on loads welcome.

I have been having decent luck with the new 130g Nosler E-tip's in both a Handi rifle as well as a custom bolt action , as no data has been put out for these bullets as of yet , Nosler said to use the data for the 130g Partitions and to consider the mid level loading as Max .

I have yet to shoot deer with these bullets but the test results form them say it is one of their better bullet designs .

I agree with these guys. I cannot get my father in law to stop using light V-MAX bullets in his 7mm Mag for deer. He hasn't lost one, but these bullets are for varmints. If you like polymer tipped bullets, try the Interbond, Nosler Ballistic tip, Nosler Accu-bond (my favorite), or even the Barnes Tipped TSX bullets in 130-150 grains. The extra money is very well spent, and much more humane, in my opinion.

I used 54gr of IMR7828 behind a 150gr SST. Worked great for me. There are probably a lot of different loads that work very well but the 110gr V-max wouldn't be amoung my choices.

got 200 hundred interlock SST 150's for the 200 vmax and actually got $2 back in change so used that (and another $20 ) for a box of SST 130's to try aslo. I got the 150's for $20.20 per hundred and figured that was a good price but 200 was all he had. Hope my bud has IMR-4831 as I have had several recommend it.

IMR-4831 is a sweet deal when it comes to the 270 Winchester.

There are of course many others, but that's all I use for mine.
