My house is about 14 miles ne of where IKE is purposed to be at 2pm tomorrow.  My grandmother and my hard headed wife are riding it out while I am stuck at work 62 miles away. 

I would appreciate any prayers for them, I know I will be praying hard myself.

I think it is dumb to try to ride it out, whatever a mere human can do to try to stop gap damage, a storm will turn around in a half minute...and maybe kill you.  I would advise them to get out and live.  In any event, you are in our thoughts and prayers.  We're wishing you all well.  Let us know the outcome.  Pete

As long as you are above the storm surge, I wouldn't worry about it.  I've had 2 make landfall just a couple of miles from my house at 140+MPH and we didn't have any damage.  Make sure you buy gas.  All the stations are out of gas around here.

My families thoughts will be for you and yours. Stay safe, I really can understand why one would would try to ride it out myself i would go. You will be in our prayes as will all of you in Ike's path

They should be fine as long as they are out of the storm surge....I road out a few...The water is my biggest concern and the aftermath.... You need to be physically able to take care of yourself in all situations.... When i evacuate I only go about 20 miles to higher ground.... Goodluck to your family I'll keep them in my prayers...

If you live in a low lying area were it could flood, then you get into trouble (like New Orleans or Galveston) Houston seems to be a lot like Dallas, there are several places that flood during heavy rains. Looks like there is some wind damage in Houston and there's a lot of power outages but otherwise they're ok. I keep hearing bad things about Beaumount and Port Arthur, but again, what are they, like 9 feet above sea level?

Here in Dallas, we're just getting some rain and some wind, nothing bad yet. My wife called one of their nursing homes in Bay City and they are ok, no damage, no flooding, but no electricity. They're talking about having to get clean linens down there just because they don't have enough electricity to wash them.

Where exactly is that that two cat 4 storms have made land fall and not done damage with wind? I am certanly not a storm expert, but I find that very hard to belive. I have seen what storms can do first hand and I have to say that straight line winds of 140 are devastating. Circulating winds of 140 are even worse. There was no surge in a bunch of the worst damaged areas in Gustav, Andrew, Katrina, and Rita. That is bad advice.
