Just a couple more day's for Squirrel season
« on: July 30, 2008, 05:21:38 AM »
Hello all, That calender seems to be moving fast as we are just a couple day's away from the start of our Squirrel season. Sometimes I will take the WMR with it's 4x32 scope and the image is like a movie camera among the green, sunlit, foilage. This can be sniping at it's finest.  I am usually much more likely to take my old H&R revolver with the LR cylinder and still hunt them but my current medical conditions may just allow for the more relaxed hunt with fewer moves. It is great to get out and I will usually take the early August time to visit & trim up the shooting lanes for the Nov deer season.

I've tried the earlier squirrel season for a couple of years, now, but, my best game getting season is still September? Maybe the difference between your part of the state and mine. Few hardwood nuts are ready in early August, up here.
Have you noticed the walnuts are much smaller, this year?

Is it August this year? Didn't it always start September 1st? Or am I not remembering correctly.

For several years now, it has opened August 1st? At least in the northern part of the state.

I certainly could be mistaken, I haven't gone in a few years.

This would be correct and is true for Doves as well as the Squirrels. That line is quite a bit farther south than I am here in the Springfield area but I don't remember
Exactly where it lies. It is perhaps near Raymond where it can be worth going to hunt some gray's.

Steve, I like those Aug mornings because of the calm & quiet and the ability to hear the chewing & limb jumping from a fair distance that allows for a great still hunt.
Sept can be more windy but also more open and one can do well. Nov & Dec can be great but by this time I have mainly switched to the Fox/Coyote hunting.
Those Squirrels have to be near the very top as a renewable resource...within the last couple years a friend and I took 75 of them out of a 40 acre patch between Aug & Oct but by the following Nov deer season, it was like we had not even scratched the surface of this population.

Steve, I have not even checked on that nut crop yet :-[ :-[

I am somewhat indisposed as you know and the Wife probably would not even let me go out alone cept for two things...The Cell phone & the Gps (which I showed her how to use). I guess that there is some use to modern technology and the ancient art of hunting ;D ;D ;D
Makes me kind of lazy though...mebe I need to get her out there to take our venison for this year. ;)

It is WAY too hot to be hunting tree rats.

Ya gotta get out there early and no, I don't mean 5:00 oclock ;D....Seems like 7:30 is about right but by 10:00 if it is getting hot at all those Squirrels will go mighty high and stay very quiet. A lot of times I will go ahead and hunt to 11:00 or so to get the last one or two on the limit depending on what I want for the day.

I recently retired and have taken advantage of the Early season. The foliage is so thick that its hard to get a good rifle shot, but i've got a few.I am located west of the Peoria area. They keep talking about the abundance of squirrels in the state, but that's definitely not true in this area, and hasn't been for several years.

Do you guys do anything different, after you shoot one, with the warm weather?
I've heard of guys skinning and gutting them right away and putting into bags.  I've never hunted them too early, so heat wasn't a huge concern.
