.22 rimfire in Encore?
« on: July 28, 2003, 02:30:37 AM »
What do I have to do to fire .22 rimfire in my Encore?  Obviously I need a barrel, I hear Bulberry makes those.  Anybody else?  What about the firing mechanism?  Is there a conversion to allow rimfire?  Also I think I saw somewhere that someone makes an off-center .22 barrel so you can used the centerfire mechanism.

Thanks.

Bullberry, and Virgin Valley both make rimfire barrels and the rimfire adapters. Another company called OTT http://www.mbmco.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?
sells rimfire barrels that do not require an adapter. Sean

Hey Nghtfall,I got a 22 lr barrel from Mike at OTT, as a matter of fact I have the first 22 lr barrel he made, it's marked "Prototype No Adapter" 22 l.r. Match. It is ever so slightly off center and the only way you can tell is if you are looking down on the top of the scope and can see a slight gap on the sides of the barrel. I have seen almost that much gap in some factory barrels. Mine is an 18 heavy barrel and it shoots fantastic. It's going to make a great airborne rat getter, and it likes the cheap ammo. He does something to the rimfire chambers where they kinda swage the bullet down before getting to the riflings, seems to work. He also doesn't use reamers for his chambers. He is definitely doing my next barrel. Give him a try. See his link in one of the previous post.

Hey steve, What exactly is off center? The bore or the locking lugs or what? Please explain a little better what you mean by a slight gap.  KN

The bore is centered with the barrel and the lug is slightly taller as the firing pin strikes the rim at the 6 o'clock position. As far as the explanation of the gap goes, Most people know there is a slight gap between the barrel and frame, on the top where the barrel rest in the frame, with the barrel horizontal that is. With the rimfire barrel in place the gap measures 25 to 30 thous. on each side, slightly more that with a center fire barrel installed. The gap isn't really visible unless viewed from the top. I love this barrel, it shoots great. Don't know why T/C didn't do this in the first place, guess it would have made too much sense.

:toast: That sounds like a pretty brilliant solution, actually!  Elegantly simple.
