Ruger 380
« on: November 16, 2008, 01:55:30 AM »
What is with the recall on the Ruger 380?  I was at a dealer a couple days ago and he had one in stock to send back, but said he would take $300.00 for it.  Seems a bit pricey to me.  Every other dealer I visited said they were on back order.

What are the thoughts on this?

Thanks
Bill

The deal on it is this:

1.  The Ruger LCPs were found to possibly discharge if accidentally dropped with a round in the chamber.
2.  There have been numerous problems with failure to feed and failure to fire at all after just a few rounds shot.
3.  All things considered, $300 is way too much now for a gun with such an unsavory history.  At some point, Ruger may fix the problems and then the LCP would be an attractive gun to purchase and, I predict the price will be lower than it is right now with LCP mania in full heat.

BillH, yes there is a recall for the Ruger LCP, but the pistol is in more demand than ever and the waiting list is longer than before the recall.  My son and several of his friends have bought this pistol and have sent them in under the recall, which BTW, will reward you with the grip extension for your trouble.  I know several people that would pay more than $300 for an LCP even with the recall.  Ruger has done several upgrades to the LCP since the first production run and my son's functioned flawlessly.  It's your call, but if you want one I wouldn't let the recall scare you off.

Like Grumulkin, I'd wait till after the "Just Gotta Have One" crowd gets theirs.  As demand lessens, they should sell in the $225-$250 range where they belong. Like the SR9, seems they were in a big hurry to get on the market with the LCP. Both have a few design problems and some are under recall. Any LCP with a serial number beginning with 371 should not be on the recall list. The ones beginning with 370 that have been factory modified will be stamped with a diamond on the little flat behind the hammer. At least according to the last information I had.

Just get a Kel -Tec, they are proven and work well. I looked at the Ruger LCP, but with all the problems, it is not worth it.

I paid $245.00 for my Kel-Tec and it has shot every bullet I have loaded in it and functions well. I have over 300 rounds through it, I like to make sure my carry gun functions.

If I am going to carry a gun for self defence, I want it to go bang when I pull the trigger.

Any thoughts on the new Micro Desert Eagle from Magnum Research??  6 shot, 380, looks to have a pivoting trigger/trigger bar setup, weighs less than 14oz..

Mine hasn't either Lloyd, but it's in the serial number range, so I guess I'll let them "fix it". They said they change out a couple of parts with upgrades and throw in a free magizine with finger extension. They said they would send me a shipping container when they get ready for my pistol, and have it back close to a week. All in all ,I like the gun a lot.

ive sent guns to ruger just to have them come back with more problems then when the left here. As long as mine runs like it does i wont let them touch it. You arent suppose to bounce a gun off the floor anyway and if you drop it in a self defense situation your have alot more to worry about then an accidental discharge!!!

I have one at the pawn shop as we speak, it has been there twice and once since the recall the owner was told about the recall when they picked it up the 1st. time if it is left I may just bring it home and send it to ruger myself and see how good they are, I have never been a fan of ruger auto though.   Jim

Well, I have pretty much decided  to go with the kel-tec pf9.  Although I do not like the color green, the grips can be replaced with black.
