Scope & mounting set-up
« on: August 21, 2008, 02:32:31 AM »
I'm getting tired of getting whacked in the forehead with my scoped 45/70 Encore.  I'm using a Bushnell Banner 3-9X with medium height rings on weaver style base and the hammer just clears the scope and is as far forward as it can get.  What set-up is available for low power scope that will both clear the hammer and have enough eye relief so as not to whack me upon recoil?  Thanks for all replies, Al

I have the same set up but I use a 1.5-4x bushnell trophy shotgun scope on mine. There is alot more eye relief and shooting off the bench it isn't eve close to touching my head. I can still make the holes touch at 100yds on 4 power. Plus the circle crosshair makes it nice for fast aquisition of targets with a huge field of view.

I use a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 with low mounts and have plenty of hammer clearance and eye relief, 4+ inches, for the 375H&H barrel.
I aim to please - but often miss.

You have to be very careful with scopes on the Encore.  I think it's the stock design in large part.  My worst cut ever from a scope was from inattention whilst shooting an Encore in 25/06, no less, from the prone position; an ER trip and several stitches were required.  I've had minor wounds several times with such rounds as 30/06 and 375 H&H Mag.  You just have to be very careful and pick a scope with good eye relief (Leupold and Nightforce are what I use).

This is a good example of how a muzzle brake could be of benefit in taming muzzle flip.

The Bushnell Banner 1.75-4X #71-1436 has a whopping 6" eye relief. That should get it far enough from your face.  It is made for use on cantilever shotgun barrels.

Thanks Woodchuck;  Would you happen to know if the eyepiece can be mounted ahead of the hammer on the Encore?  Would you happen to know what the eye relief is on my Banner 3-9 X 40mm is?

I don't know for sure, but I'll bet it can with 6" of eye relief.  Look at the model number on your scope and do a on-line search for it.  Somebody will have the specs.

You might consider changing your base to a Steve Stratton 6-screw base if that's not what you already have.    With it's multiple slots you can move a scope forward further than a with a 4-screw base.   Besides from Steve, I think you can get them from MGM and maybe Bullberry.    While it would be preferred to have the 2 additional screws drill and tapped, because they are steel you wouldn't have to.   Seems like they run about $35.   I have several of them for Contender barrels from the Virgin Valley days, and they are some of the best scope bases made for TC's.

Another possibility would be to add a SSK T'SOB base and rings.   Same multiple slots for the rings.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Al, Depending upon how much more clearance you need and the working eye relief of your scope, you might want to consider a set of extended rings (with two extensions, not one as most are sold).  The Millett Angle-Loc extended rings (EX2500X series) will let you move the scope an additional .625" without switching out the base although I don't think I'd do it with an inexpensive aluminum base held with 4 screws.

If you go to the Bushnell site, http://www.bushnell.com/general/riflescopes.cfm?section=General%20Use , you can look up your particular scope model.  The 3x9 Banners' eye relief depends upon which model you have.

I have a 45-70 barrel also. I use a Simmons Pro Diamond 4X shotgun scope on it. It has either 5 or 5 1/2" of eye relief and only weighs 8 ounces. The diamond reticle makes picking up moving targets in brush a snap. It's mounted in medium height rings and sits it front of the hammer. My handload shoots a 405 grain Cast Performance bullet at 1700 fps (read that as kick you silly) and my scope has never touched me. Hope this helps.

It's the Weaver style base sold by T/C. And yes, the sight picture is perfect if you throw it up or shooting off a bench.

Is it called a scout base? Or is just a stock base?

Stock base. If you find the actual Weaver brand name base it's part #48513. Description is "410 top mount base". It's a one piece base.
