In the box
« on: December 08, 2011, 04:27:34 PM »
Well, I decided to send my 18" Maxi barrel to SSK and have it turned into a 358 JDJ.  I already have one in a 14" contender, and I think it'll make a neat handi.  I will eventually get another maxi also, but I've been itching to get the 358 for a while.  Should be a kick in the pants to shoot also!

Ok I gotta ask, what is special about the JDJ version of the 358?  Still a 308 necked up to 35 cal right?

JDJ chamberings are based on the 444 Marlin.

hmmm, that could be fun 180 gr bullet traveling at 2,000 fps carrying 1,800 fpe... very effective and with a rimmed case as the parent case it is perfect for single shots

It will do a lot more than that with 180gr, Graybeard got 2300fps with 225gr bullets in a 14" Contender.

JD's Max will do close to 2500fps out of a 14" contender with the 180sspb...I am getting 2250fps with 225gr Nosler's.  I figure I should get close to 2400fps with the 225's out of the 18" handi barrel.  It'll be fun to experiment.  It's not really any more special than some of the other 35's but I just like the caliber.  It's easy to load for and produces great results.

I live about ten miles from ssk he has cut some barrels off for me but he told me that is about all he will do to a handi rifle barrel, maybe he changed his ways

Is this a case of preferential treatment for a previous customer with experience with the cartridge already? Catch someone on the right day and in the right mood things like that can happen.
I can understand him not wanting to take on another line of firearms for conversion. On a grand scale there are such things as research and liabilities involved.

The 375 JDJ was a premium chambering for the Contender, and taking it on down to 358 would certainly make a fine cartridge, or even a 375 Winchester, making a 35/55 I guess. To bad there is not a single 375 or 400 bore in the lineup. The 444 is an excellent base for many cartridges, but the main platform for wildcatting has been bolt rifles for a long time, so except for Mr Jones, no one has worked much with it. It has been described as a rimmed '06 case, pretty close in capacity.

Tim

Just as a point of order, many are based on the 444 case 358 JDJ included, but not all of them!
The 225 Win is also a parent case for some smallest thru 7MM calibers. The 30 up to .416 is based on 444 case and the newer 950 behemoth is based on a shortened 50 BMG case.  ;)

I know of someone else who has made quite a line of them too. ;)  He does work on Handis all the time too. Email only for info.

I talked to SSK this afternoon and they just sent my barrel out!!!  My christmas present came through.  I spoke with J.D. before Christmas and he wasn't sure he was gonna be able to do the job because of the forend lug on the barrel, but they managed to work around it.  I hope it'll be here by the weekend so I can go play.  Will give a range report ASAP.

Got the barrel today...looks good.  I had to resize all of my 358 brass though...seems my contender has a little different chamber but that wasn't a hard fix.  The problem is my extractor.  I ordered a 444 extractor and it would work fine, except it's too wide for the channel that is cut into the barrel.  I think I'm just gonna take the old 357max extractor and cut it down to fit...I could cut the 444, but it looks like more work.  I can't wait to touch one off...will send a range report!
