45/410 barrel question, does it shoot well?
« on: September 16, 2008, 09:00:25 AM »
I've got a 1945 h&r folding 410 that shoots very well w shot or rifled slugs.  I'd love to have a new barrel for my handi.  should i get a standard full choke or the rifled one so i can shoot 45's too.  I've heard that the lip on the 3" chamber can interfere w accuracy when shooting 45 colt.  if anyone can comment i appreciate it.  ab

The 45/410 barrel has no sights, just a bead and it isn't drilled and tapped for a scope rail, but can be. Some shooters have been "satisfied" with the accuracy after adding a scope/sights. If you want accurate, get the 45LC barrel, but be aware they probably won't fit it to any frame made before 1999, I was told that personally by Gordon at Gardner, whether Remington has changed that policy is unknown at this time. His reason was the closer tolerances of the late model frames and they're better built, but I believe it's a CYA to avoid problems from rechambers to Casull and 460S&W.

i'd put it on a modern handi (2005ish) so compatibility should not be an issue.

You can see the CR45LC Carbine sights on the H&R site, they're dovetailed sights, not mounted with screws, it's chambered for 45 long colt only, not good for shotshells, it's also drilled and tapped for a scope base.

thanks, 'not sure but i think i'll go w the bead sights.  this gun is for versatillily on camping trips woods rather than long range accuracy.  I take it the rifled barrel is still better than the smooth bore.

The 45/410 barrel is rifled, but has a choke tube that's installed when shooting shot. How effective it is as a .410 I dunno, never been impressed with any .410, so I can't answer that part. But the long jump to the rifling for shooting 45 Colt is very detrimental to accuracy I would think. Those that have handloaded 450 Mongo(410, 444 or longer brass) in them have improved accuracy some, but that's another topic.

yup, that's what i thought - it'll be smoothbore.  funky little gun, and like i said i like the one i've got.   I'll let you know if the new one is as good for grouse and rabbits as my antique.  ab
