Gold Dots?

Do you think Speer Gold Dots in 158 gr would work out of my 357 for deer out to 50 yards?

We shot the 158 gr. Gold dot into water jugs at 25 yds. (it was the softpoint version.), they didn't expand very good at all. All of the other gold Dots we tested were the HP version in calibers ranging from 357 to 475 Linebaugh and they performed exceptionally well. They looked like the pictures you see in the ads (perfect expansion)

Jerry Lester is our resident expert on using the .357 Magnum on deer and I think his recommended bullet of choice is the Remington 158 JSP if memory serves me correctly.

I always had better luck with 158 JSPs than JHPs on deer. True, the JHPs had more expansion, but less penetration. I do have some 158 Gold Dots loaded over 17 grains of Lil' Gun I'd would like to try tho......

158 grain Gold dots in soft points. I do not recomend hollow points for game as big as deer in the .357. I like the combination of penetration and exspansion that you get from soft points. Leaning more towards penetration than exspansion. Any brand 158 softpoint will work fine, If you do your part.

Yes, go with the softpoint version. I use the 270 grain gold dot soft point out of my .44 mag and it works great!

Have you ever thought about hard casts. I used to carry my S&W model 28 4" with buffalo bore 180 grain bullets and ithink federal also loads a 180
