3006 or the 270

i don't know if this is the right place to ask but i will anyway i have an 270 encore pistol now and a encore rifle in a 3006 and was thinking about ether going with the 270 or the 3006 in both to help with ammo cost but cant make up my mind which one i live in Indiana and don't really hunt any thing with the rifle but like to shoot and shoot rifles and do use it for coyotes and other critters when i fill the need the 270 i use for deer in the pistol but wouldn't mind going to the 3006 if it would be the chose any advice would be appreciated

        I bought an encore 30-06 rifle years ago that I hunt with out of state.  I thought it would be a smart idea to buy a 30-06 hand gun barrel for it so I'd only have to load up one kind of ammo.  I only went to the range with it one time and then I sold the handgun barrel on ebay, back you could sell gun parts there.  I've shot 44 mags loaded hot and heavy and they didn't compare to that 30-06 handgun.  I don't recommend  the high powered rifle handgun barrels.  For me, it wasn't not recoil, it was painful.  Everyone likes to hunt with something a little different I woudn't try to stop you from anything you enjoy.  It's just been my experience that with that much power in a handgun, good luck hitting anything.

Yep, a '06 handgun rocks.  Make sure you have good scope mounts and a high quality handgun scope.

I would look at the 7mm-08 Remington as dual use for the T/C Encore pistol and rifle barrels.

The 7mm-08 Remington is the perfect cartridge for the Encore pistol and is really close to the 270 Winchester in power for rifle use.

Also you can most likely trade both your barrels for 7mm-08 Remington barrels and lose zero money.

I concur with yooper, the 7mm-08 is the way to go in a pistol and does well in the rifle also.

Since you already have Encore barrels in 270 and 30-06, and you state your purpose is to save money, it makes more sense to pick one or the other from what you already have rather than replacing both with a totally different cartridge.   

Assuming you stay with either the 270 or '06... Apparently like me you are not bothered by the recoil of the 270 in a pistol.   It would be a little more in a 30-06 pistol, especially with heavier bullets, but while that may not bother you either it's still something to consider.   You don't say if you reload or have to rely only on factory ammo.   I think the 270 is the better choice if you have to rely only on factory ammo simply because you can get lighter factory loads for it than for the 30-06 that are better suited for game smaller than deer, and nothing you shoot needs the heavier bullets of the 30-06.    If you do reload, the 30-06 has a much better choice of bullets available, but since the 270 can cleaning kill deer and bigger game as well as the 30-06 even with the lighter bullets available for it, that may not be a factor for you. 

When I had to cross this road in buying a new rifle decades ago, I went with the 270 and never regretted it.   Took a heck of a lot of pronhorns, mule deer, elk, a moose, a couple of caribou with it, and with light bullets a lot of coyotes.   I only loaded and shot 90, 110, 130 and 150 grain bullets in it, but never felt I gave anything away to the 30-06's heavier bullets.

What is perfect on an Encore or Contender pistol or carbine is entirely personal opinion.   I've owned more than 200 barrels for TC's, and could say all of them were perfect.   But like everybody else, I have my favorites, and that list does not include the 270, 30-06 or 7-08.   If you didn't already have the two barrels, I agree the 7-08 would be a great choice for the shooting you do, but so would be quite a few other choices as well.   

Comes down to whether you want to spend the extra money for just one barrel, or for two.   You can regain some of the money by selling the used barrel(s), but not all of it.
