Winchester 777 primers....misfires??
« on: September 08, 2008, 11:14:35 AM »
I was out shooting today and experienced 6 misfires with the 777 primers.  That's out of about 75 rounds or so.  I know that's not many, but it's almost a 10% misfire rate.  These were new primers bought this year.  The load was 110gr FFg 777.  Just wondering if anyone else has been having problems with them.  Maybe I just got a bad package...    Any other recommendations for primers?  I've used the Remington Premier 209's and the 777 primers.  I haven't tried any others.

Thanks!

If you believe what you read on the net, it seems to be a fairly common problem.  I've used them in my Knight Wolverine with no problems but the accuracy isn't very good.

This the first time I've had a problem.  Between my two hunting buddies and myself, we went through 5 packs before last ML season, and I used about half of them.  Not a single problem.  And it was in a variety of rifles, a couple T/C's, a couple of Knights, and a CVA.

Today one rifle was a Wolverine and one was an Omega.  I had two misfires in the Knight and 4 with the Omega.

Accuracy with these was better than with the Premier 209's and there was much less fouling in front of the breech plug.  That's why I changed to them.

I didn't have any misfires with them, but I got ALOT of blowby. Back of the breach plug and the breach face on my Encore looked as bad as the front of the plug. I use 100 grains of FF 777. The Remington Kleanbores work alot better for me. Cleanest burning combo and most accurate to boot.

The 777 primers have the black center in them.

I also had several 777 primers not go off last fall.

I have been shooting them for a couple of years now and not had a single problem with them... although for hunting I do switch to a Remington 209-4, a 410 shotgun primer that is no longer available.

What gun are you shooting - if you are shooting one with a breech block often you get a build up on the firing pin inside the block, that will shorten the travel of the pin, you'll never see it unless you take it apart and clean the pin...

If it was your Omega here is a diagram to take the block apart to clean the pin - I have had to do this twice the build up occurs right on the shoulder....

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I'll have to check that out.  I hadn't fired the gun but about 15 times before yesterday.  The 1st misfire with the Omega happened on the second load.  Then there was about 10 shots that went fine, then another misfire, probably 15 more shots, a misfire, and so on.

The Knight misfired on the third shot, then again a few shots later.  It's a regular plunger striker Wolverine.

I bought a couple packs of the Remington Kleenbore ML Primers today to try out.  We'll see if there's any difference.

Well, I didn't do anything to the gun yet.  I shot a whole pack of the Kleenbore Primers today without a single misfire.  I think that I'll keep using them, accuracy was good, no worse fouling that the 777, actually seemed a little better.

you should see my optima when i use those 777 primers. the frame and under the forearm are just covered in black fouling. They are dirty as heck.

CCI is the cleanest and kleanbores are the second cleanest.

I am suprised, but do not doubt your problem. I have hunted with en Encore ML with 150 grains of 777 in front of the 777 primers and have never had a problem at all. This has been in temps ranging from 65 to -10.  You know this, but the manner in which you store and handle primers can adversely effect the reliability of them as well.  I have used all of the brands of primers, 209s, 777, Kleanbore, etc, and I always get the fouling ring in my Encore.  As much as I like 777 propellant, It just burns dirty, plain and simple. You might get slightly better results in some guns with sme different primers, but in the end, in my experience, you simply must take the time to clean.
