Did you buy it brandy new from the gun store? I'm just askin 'cause if someone had a trigger job done on it, sometimes a smith will put stronger hammer springs in 'em. But...if it's out of the box stock, and tough as you say...then I'd give TC a call and 'splain to 'em that you need a hydraulic jack to cock the hammer.

Friends son bought it new / we'll go to the gun shop, pull another off the shelf and see what it's like.

Hydraulic jack to cock the hammer ... true - LOL.

My Encore blued frame is from 1997 and it has a smooth hammer pull and trigger pull, no work done to it other than factory.

I was thinking of sending it in for the swing hammer conversion, but I convinced myself that its fine and I don't want anyone messing something up.  Plus $69.00 for just a swing hammer, yikes!

Mike Bellm and others have some great Hammer Extensions.

NEW "TRIPLE LOCK" HAMMER EXTENSION USES 3 SET SCREWS, TWO LOCKED INTO THE GROOVES IN THE HAMMER SPUR AND THE TRADITIONAL SCREW FROM THE SIDE. CANNOT SLIP FORWARD!

I have a hammer extension, bought it before I read T/C doesn't recommend them, so I never tried it or put it on and probably will never use it.

I don't want to mess up and void any warranty with an extension.  My Encore also has the factory trigger stop, which has been discontinued in new frames.

True with anything that would void warranty / unless your like me and start modifying from day 1 - LOL.

Some Hammer Extensions are made from heat treated, high tensile strength aircraft aluminum for greatest strength and lightest weight - that's what I use when I use one.

Interesting - My ProHunter hammer is quite hard to pull back. With a scope mounted it is even more difficult to pull with the hammer spur rotated to the side a bit. I had Mike (censored guy) rework the trigger shortly after receiving the rifle so I'm not sure if it was like that originally or just after the trigger work. I can't imagine why a gunsmith would make the hammer more difficult to pull than the factory.

Varmint Hunter:  I'm scratching my head that any Hammer would pull so hard .... as soon as I can travel in the direction of our local gun shop, I'll be pulling every Pro-Hunter they have off the rack and pulling the Hammer back.

I posted because I like Graybeard and Graybeard Outdoors - the Members and visitors are as good as it gets.

Here's the worse of this story, the heavy Hammer Pull was there from the day of purchase but not communicated to me until after it received a Pro Trigger Job .................... if this Frame requires the Godzilla Spring, then we'll just have to grit our teeth / he's put a custom 22" Heavy SS Barrel in 7MM-08 on it .... it's a shooter / his dad handloads with the steadiness of a brain surgeon / it's all interesting and fun.

I can tell you if you had Mike (don't dare mention his name here) do the trigger work on your Encore, it's gonna be hard to pull back because he puts in a heavy hammer spring.

There are 2 reasons TC doesn't want the hammer extension on. The first is the factory hammer spring isn't strong enough to "spring forward" the hammer and the extension with enough force to consistently strike the primers hard enough. And the second is with the additional weight of the extension, some hammers have been known to break.

I don't see any advantage to an extension on a pro-hunter with the swinging spur.  Just more to cause trouble.

Well, your in a "catch 22" situation here. If you call TC and they tell you to send it back to them, when they get it they will replace all the internal parts with factory "stuff" and there goes your trigger job you just paid for. Unless you first remove the sear and other "stuff" that the trigger work was done on.

If Mike (censored word) did the work, call him up and ask for a lighter hammer spring. Those are not difficult to install.

BTW, I agree with Keith....hammer extensions are not worth the trouble they cause.

Davemuzz :    Catch 22's ... their like Murphy / after visit to local gunshop, more likely than not we'll be contacting ( You know who ) - they like the stronger springs, but this thing is a thumb wrecker / could live with it, but why do that .... we shoot a lot of paper.

I can't imagine why the censored guy would put a heavy hammer spring in a ProHunter that has a pivoting hammer. It's obvious that you would not be adding an additional hammer spur. But who knows..........................

Mike did not do anything to the spring - the rifle was purchase by a youngster here and the Hammer was a Monstor to pull back / not knowing but what that was the way it was supposed to be, he sent it out for a Premium Trigger Job.

I went to the Gun Shop today and pulled the Hammer back on 3 different Pro Hunters .... they were fine / learned there that all Encore Frames are the same from the Factory ( Well ................ you know what I mean ).

We have money into the frame now / called you know who - he said send it to him, no charge to fix.

I'd be VERY interested in knowing how you make out with the service and finished trigger/hammer.

The swing hammer isn't all that it's cracked up to be. With the hammer pivoted out at a 45 deg angle I can still not get a good enough purchase on it for a reliable draw of the heavy hammer. A 90 deg hammer spur would likely work much better at making the hammer accessible when a scope is mounted. How about a longer hammer that is pivoted? That might just do the trick.

You'd think that T/C would have this all worked out by now. After all, how many ProHunters are actually used with iron sights?

Varmint Hunter:    If he sends it to M, I'll post the findings and results here. He's been cocking and un-cocking a lot to see if something frees up ...... will advise.

The swing hammer is lacking because of the angle / amazing.

Youngster saying he's going to live with the stiff hammer - said to be 5 times stiffer than others / disappointing to me as I don't sit on these kind of fixable problems.

Mike has a 40 lb and a 50 lb hammer spring. I mostly use his 40, I bought a new pro Hunter a couple of months back and it is much heavier than the previous Encore I owned. I don't know if they did that to take care of misfires from hammer extension or not. However I do know sometimes when the trigger has been lightened the safety does not work. The hammer spring has to be shortened to make them work, however it can and usually will cause misfires. I've had to replace the hammer springs in a couple of rifles to stop the misfires where they have had trigger work and the hammer spring had been shortened. They may have went to a heavier hammer spring because of a light hammer.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.  If it breaks make it better next time.

Well.....you know "youth". They pretty much know everything.....until if I remember....my son hit about 22 or 23.....then he started to realize that "dear 'ol Dad" actually knew a few things about life and the real world. Imagine that!

Let him go thru a hunting season with it. That may change his mind.

OK, fellas.  Should I send in my blue Encore frame for the swing hammer?

It was bought in 1997, has the factory trigger stop, nice hammer pull and smooth crisp trigger pull.

I can get my fat thumb under my scopes without gloves but I need to quickly pull off the glove during winter months.

I just don't want T/C to install some of these heavy springs or mess something else up by installing this swing hammer.

yooper77:   There's an Aircraft Alum ( Light  weight ) Hammer Extension available that we use / I like that over the Swing Unit that angles back - streight out is easier to get hold of ( My thoughts ).

Thank you RipOne, but I forgot to add I don't want to use an extension and bugger up my hammer with set screws.

RipOne, I believe you are correct.  I haven't had any work done to my frame.  So maybe I should leave things alone and keep on shooting.

yooper77:  That works .....

I don't like marks on my firearms, but most of them have some little mark that was collected along the way.

The marks on the hammer from Hammer Extention would probably never be seen - the ones we've used have never been taken off ... useful and no need to take off ( My thoughts ). If sold, the buyer will surley leave it on.
