BIG WIND.
« on: September 19, 2008, 12:20:41 PM »
Last Sunday we had some extremely strong winds from Ike. Steady winds of 60 mph with gusts from 80 - 94 mph. Hardly a residence in my area that didn't have damage. Lost power last Sunday at 1 pm, got it back yesterday. Power surge fried our air cond, tv, vcr, dvd player, sound system, tv antennae, several power strips and blown bulbs in several rooms + a big limb through the roof and limbs down everywhere.  A  lot of the local repair crews were in Texas helping out there. Still about 100,000 in Lou out of power, and some in our area too. So Indiana about the same shape. We did well, had a 2 radios, plenty to eat, my wife no longer makes fun of me for having her buy a few cans of spam, darned good when you're hungry, the stored bottled water helped a lot too. Dipped water from the cistern, most folks raised today would die of thirst trying to get water that way. Neighbors helped neighbors, the way it should be. All that wind and not a drop of rain, we are extremely dry here. Counties around us were declared disaster areas, with a 9 pm curfew, to control the looters. Natl gurad used for roadblocks and directing traffic. My little 30 cal carbine stayed close, but was not needed. Yes, I have several shotguns, but I'm really partial to that lil carbine. I also started vacation Sunday, couldn't afford to go anywhere anyway, but I'm really tired and worn out from all of the cleanup. Insurance co no help, take everything to a repair shop for evaluation. Closest one would be Lou, a good 60+ miles, in other words we are on our own. Insurance is only good if you never use it. There was a bright side to this. With all of the downed power lines on the ground a couple of punks decided to take advantage of their good fortune and steal more copper. They found a live one. The gene pool got a small cleansing. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thank God that you got through this one with your sense of humor intact.  Sounds like you live in a good place, with neighbors who pull together.  As for the copper thieves, the one who got whistled out of  the gene pool did not suffer, and the one who survived will probably feel aftereffects the rest of his life.

Powderman, I hope your posting isn't ignored by the folks.  My wife sometimes thinks I'm paranoid when I disconnect all the electronics during thunderstorms and when the power goes out.  Even though nearly everything that is vulnerable is on surge protectors, I don't trust those things.  One of my friends who had the best protector he could find had his computer fried during a storm.  Hey, I even disconnect the phone line.

These steps are some of the best insurance one can take and it doesn't cost a dime.

300 yard target and 60 mph wind?

Never was any lightning, just wind. I screwed up by not unhooking everything for sure. Found a blown fuse in the sound system, it's fine now.
About 15 years ago we were shooting my 45acp accross the  hollow, about 130+ yds with a 50 mph wind. I found I could still hit the bucket aiming 8-10 ft to the left. It was a lot of fun. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

More good news. Replaced a blown fuse in the vcr dvd player and it works now, also found one in the tv, will get a fuse Monday, hope thats all it is.  Now I hope I can find a blown fuse in the air cond. Coffee pot is toast though. Still lots of folks without power tonight. News said that folks on food stamps would get their spoiled food replaced. I'm happy for them, but there are a lot of hard working folks that could use help too. I've heard horror stories about insurance companies giving a lot of folks the shaft. One guy lost part of his roof, has 2 big limbs on his house, and a big tree on his barn. Insurance said he has $1,000 deductible, he said $500, and they figure that should cover it. Insurance is only good if you never use it. POWDERMAN.  :o :o :o :o :o :o

Glad to hear things are looking up for you. I didn't get very excited when I saw the steady 60 mph wind as that is a common thing here in the spring, but the 94 mph got my attention. We had 93 mph in a thunderstorm a couple of years ago and you couldn't see anything but water and hailstones for about 15 minutes.  When it was over with I had lost a big tree and my neighbor had one blown over on top of his house.
