Strange problem with once fired brass
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:58:25 PM »
I purchased a box a Hornady ammo and shot it through my rifle (7mm-08).  I was going to use the brass to reload.  The problem is this brass will not chamber now!!  I DID NOT resize!  Before I ran any brass through the sizer die I ran a brass through the rifle and it was tight and this is with the same rifle I just shot the round.  It feels like a streched shoulder but how can this be?  I use a maker and colored the brass and it looks like the shoulder is where most of the contact occurs.  I also tried trimming and I still can't get this to work.  Any ideas?

Its going to stretch and fit tight but you should not have to force it real hard.
you said don't fit then tight ????
what are you shooting Tc/Handi /Bolt action??

Sako bolt action.  I fired the ammo through this gun and now the brass is hard to chamber.  I didn't resize the brass or anything else.  All the fired brass is this way.  I tried resizing, triming, I measured and eveything looks right.  I can't figure out what is going on.

Part of the problem is the chamber has cooled and contracted more than the brass cooled and contracted.  We're talking thousandths of an inch here.

Tried cleaning the chamber yet?  Wiped off the exterior of the cases?  Any grit/oil buildup/etc. in the chamber or on the rounds will tend to cause a lot of friction in the tight little space between chamber wall and rifle shoulder.  Any indication on a spent round that there is an obstruction in the chamber?  Any inward bulges on the shoulder of a fired round?

Once fired rounds through a chamber should not be difficult to rechamber in the same rifle once the necks have been resized.

You could have a loose lock-up that enables the round to grow in length when the rifle is hot.  That is more difficult to diagnose.  Try warming the rifle up with factory rounds then insert a resized neck round.  If the resized fits when the gun is hot but not cold, have a gunsmith work with you to further diagnose the problem.

I have a similar problem.  I think we finally diagnosed it.  The barrel is a new shilen.  When the round is fired and you try to open the gun it is difficult to cam over the bolt in a savage 110.

My brother a gunsmith started checking it out.  My extractor broke while doing this.  We checked the case, and he says he can feel a slight out of roundness of the spent case.

This means once the case is extracted to rechamber you would have to have the round in the exact align as it came out.  That is not possible.  He is going to take a spent cartridge with polishing compound to round out the chamber which would allow the round to roll when the chamber is being opened rather than seizing the case which requires the excessive force which resulted in broke extractor.

Ok, you full length sized all your brass, trimmed and they all still dont chamber?

How did the factory ammo feel?

Ok , lets work this out .

Rifle -- Sako bolt action

Cal. -- 7mm08

Ammo - Hornady - factory

Un-sized will not fit to chamber or will fit VERY hard .

Will FL Sized cases chamber ok ?

Take a marker and index @ strait up , a new factory round , fire that round and then try to rechamber it as it was index'ed , if it will chamber then try it at 90* either way . this will tell you if your chamber is out of round .

Next try to solwly work a fired case in the FL Sizing die a little at a time till you get it to chamber with out a problem , this will need to be done in steps , size / check , size / check till it fits .

This doesn't sound to me like a headspace problem were the case is sliding back and letting the shoulder move forward too much but more like a mis-cut chamber .

Give this a try .

Thanks for the help.  I will try and see if chamber is out of round.
