Spartan or Stoeger sideby?
« on: August 20, 2008, 12:39:50 AM »
I'm looking to buy a side by side and I'm looking at the Stoeger uplander and Remington Spartan.  I had a Stoeger over/under that worked great until I sold it to my cousin when I needed money in college.  I also had a stoeger coach gun but I didn't like the shorter barrel.  Any thoughts or suggestions on why I should go with one over the other(Stoeger/Spartan)?  I'm looking for 12ga preferably in a 26" barrel.  It will likely be a rabbit, grouse, and clays gun.  And yes, I only am interested in a side by side, I'm not concerned about how they compare to semi's and over/unders.

Before they were Remington Spartans, they were FIE Baikals.  Same gun, different name and price.  I've owned a few Baikals--currently have  Sideby's in 12 and 16 Ga.  The Russian guns have stocks cast off for a right-hand shooter, but I was able to have my 12 straightened up a bit since I'm a lefty. I've shot that gun, trouble-free, for at least two rounds of trap nearly every weekend for about 5 Summers now-not a lick of trouble. It's actually my shotgun of choice for about everything.  If I were to do it over, I'd have bought one with 26 inch barrels instead of 28--personal preference.  They made one in 24 inch, and my brother has one.  The Stoegers look nice--fellow club members like them--but the only ones I've seen were short ones.  A couple of years ago the Shooting Sportsman, a magazine dedicated to very pricey double shotguns, did an article on what was then the Baikal--they put thousands of rounds through a 20 ga, with no troubles at all.  Must have been a chore for them to do, given that this publication focuses on guns that cost in the six-figure range--beyond the wildest dreams of most of us. One thing about Spartan/Stoeger--you'll have money enough left over, if you buy one, to pay for some ammo.

Thanks for the reply, I'm somewhat familiar with the stoeger but I really didn't know much about the spartans.  Your info makes me feel comfortable buying either, I'll have to see what I can find the best deal on!

I held the o/u spartan today, they didn't have the sbs but the quality seemed better than the stoeger.  The spartan's action was much smoother.  I did get to look at the stoeger and it seemed to be decent quality for the money, I was dissapointed it didn't have a recoil pad, just a buttplate.

For about the same $$ you can buy a good used Browning Citori, about three huge leaps above those others.

I'd be really interested in a Citori if I could find one for $325 as well.  Just checked out my two remaining Baikals--sideby sides.  Both have factory installed recoil pads kind of like decellerators.  I know that my over-unders did as well.  Must be Remington went back to buttplates when they took over importation of the Spartan line.

jlchucker, I think you might have mis-read my post, actually the Stoeger had a buttplate on the side by side but spartan and stoeger o/u both had recoil pads.

I have had Baikals and Spartans, I still have the Stoeger SXS in 12 and 16 ga.  I reallly like the Stoeger 16 ga, the lighter barrels are on the same receiver as the 12 ga.  For me this gives it a nice swing for dove hunting and a lighter gun for stalking dove all afternoon.

The Baikals/Spartans are work horses but I prefer the Stoeger.  Also, the Stoeger is case neutral which is perfect for me as i shot shotguns left handed.

I dont think you can go wrong with either just comes down to what feels better to you and which one you like better.

Well I picked up a Stoeger uplander combo, came with both 20ga and 12ga barrels. The wood is surprisingly nice and a shiny laquer finish!  It has a mid bead as well as on the end of the rib and the action is much smoother than the standard models I looked at.  It also has the english style stock which I prefer with a very nice recoil pad.  Honestly it looks a lot nicer than any other Stoegers I've seen I'll try and get some pics posted.  I took it out shooting and it didn't go great at first though.  First three rounds out of the right barrel were light strikes.  After that I didn't have any more problems, I guessing the machining is a little rough maybe a burr on the firing pin or something?  I shot a dozen more rounds with no problems after that.  I shot both the 20 and 12 gauge and other than the couple misfires at the start I'm very happy!  I'm going to try and run a full box of 12's through it next weekend before small game season opens up to make sure I don't have any more problems.  I don't notice a huge weight difference with the 20ga barrels on compared to the 12ga but it will be a nice way to get the kids started in a couple years and I like the different options it offers.

I can't seem to get putfile to work for me on my computer at home.  I can't upload pics at work because our computers won't allow us to run an active-x.  For some reason my home computer now will not run the active-x on putfile so I'm stuck uploading pics right now.
