Anyone tried the Varmint Nightmare HPs from Midsouth?
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:48:35 PM »
I have been very happy with 40 gn VMax and Lil'gun in my Handi Hornet.
That said,
Midsouth sells their 34 gn Varmint Nightmare for $34.48 per 500. Less than half the price of VMax.
These little HPs look a lot like the Speer TNTs that shoot very well in my hornet. The TNTs aren't quite as
consistent as the VMax and they cost more. But for half price, I am tempted to give the Varmint Nightmare's a try
I hate to go out and fix something that ain't broke but Half Price really rings my bell.
Anyone tried these bullets?

I have a Handi 22 Hornet SL. It will not shoot the 40 grain V Max and get any kind of a group (3"+ @ 50 yards). I also have a Savage Model 40 and it likes the 40 grain V Max just fine. The Mid South 34 grain HP shoots much better out of the SL. While not outstanding, it does shoot them about as well as any thing I have tried. If you do try them, try H110 or W 296. Those two powders get higher velocity with this light bullet than it does with Lil'Gun. Starting load is 12.4 of H110 with a WW case and CCI 500 (small pistol) primers - straight out of Speer Reloading manual #14 for thier 33 grain bullet. I am getting around 3000 fps out of my 20" SL barrel and around 3100 fps out of my Savage model 40 with 24" barrel. The cases look good and the primers also look good with no signs of case stretching. If you are using a small rifle primer, then all bets are off. You will get higher pressures and more erratic velocities. I tried Remington 6 1/2 primers, but I got better results (more consistant) with the CCI. I got such good results with the CCI 500's that I bought another 1000. I am not done experimenting yet. I have 25 loaded (w/W296) up to try in my Model 40 right now - just have to get out there and pull the trigger. In a pliminary trial I got 2 sub .5" 3 shot groups at 50 yards. I am going to stretch it out to 100 and do some 5 shot groups. The 34 grain bullet looks very promising to me. I have just started to work with it in my 221 Fire Balls too. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I have used the 20gr ones in a 17 Rem FB and they shoot very well, this is a 3 shot group at 100 yards using them.  Larry

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.
