Possibly moving to TN
« on: August 12, 2008, 05:34:45 AM »
I have recently been considering moving the family.  I have been in FLorida for about 30 yrs.  The town I live in has grow considerably in that time.  We were looking at Alabama, but now are considering Tennessee.  I would like to find an area that I can get between 5 and 10 acres to build a new home on.  Somewhere where land is cheap, and doesn't have a lot of restrictions.  I am drawn to the part of the state south of Nashville.  I am considering Giles, Lawrence, or Lincoln counties.  Does anybody have any informarion on this area, or any other area I should look at?   Any areas to avoid?  any better than others?   What about hunting and shooting near by?  I welcome any and all input.

Stay away from the Memphis area. Crime rate is through the roof and not looking to get any better.

Middle Tennessee is wonderful. I moved back to Tennessee after living in Sarasota, FL for the past 6 years and I wish I had not waited so long. I grew up in Franklin County, TN in a town called Estill Springs. It is on Tims Ford Lake and is a great area. From there you are an hour from Nashville, an hour from Huntsville, AL and an hour from Chattanooga. There are mountains, valleys, huge lakes and flat farmland. Great hunting and fishing and land is still reasonable.

I live in Clarksville, TN now because of work. I lived here in Clarksville about 12 years ago when I was in the Army and it has grown alot.

The counties you mention are not bad. Grundy county would not be a good choice. Very poor area, lots of crime and meth use. Winchester, Tullahoma, Shelbyville, Manchester are all good choices. They are small towns with little more than a movie theater, bowling alley and a few eateries. Tullahoma has a mall and a few common chain restaurants. The closer you get to Nashville, the more you will pay. Checkout Hillsboro, just outside Manchester. Land is cheaper there.

While you are looking, check out a few towns west of Nashville. Dickson, McEwen and the I-40 towns west of Nashville. North of Nashville can be expensive if you go up I-65. However, if you go up i-24 towards Clarksville, then Springfield, Joelton and that area is still pretty nice.

Feel free to PM me for any info you need. BTW, I was born in Alabama and still have most of my family there. It would take a lot for me to go back to Alabama. Tennessee continues to grow while Alabama continues to struggle. FWIW, Tennessee is the 2nd best state to start a new business. Tennessee offers new companies a nice incentive package and that is why they are getting so much new industry.

I am not a native of TN but I am never planning to leave, I love it. If you are looking for property anywhere in the middle TN area, check out the following website, they have every property for sale in mid Ten. You can search by whatever criteria you wish. You will find some cheap property, just hit the Mapquest button to see hwere it is. Should you be lucky enough not to be too close to Nashville, you can pick up some bargains right now.

Any of the three counties are great.  My brother lives in Giles.  I'd also consider Hickman, Lewis and Marshall counties.

Depending on exactly what you want, might consider looking a little further west in TN. The population thins out a little and the land is flatter.
Areas near the Tennessee River, Kentucky and Barkley lakes have access to a lot of fishing and hunting and the land prices are reasonable.

Like Alan said, the area about Land Between the Lakes is great. Paris and Dover are nice little towns. Waverly and Camden are a little bigger, I think they have a Wal-Mart.

I like to the hills and mountains, but there is really great deer hunting in Stewart County.

Don't  come to Dickson. It has become an extention of Nashville. Had our first drug connected shoot out last month. I came here 20+ years ago and it was a nice area. Looking to move out if I can get the wife to go or sent me a check once a month.

I have been to Dickson several times, I didn't know it was getting bad. It seems like a nice area. Funny story though, the only high speed chase I have seen first hand was while I was sitting at the Applebee's in Dickson. That was about 2 years ago.

Some of our younger cops think they are cowboys. I guess they are afraid the person they are chasing can out run the radio.

You are probably best off to call the county clerk for the counties you are looking at. I am sure they can fill you in.

I'm driving up to TN in 2 weeks to check out Giles, Lawrence, Lincoln and Marshall counties.  Any last minute info on specific towns or areas to look at, or to avoid?

Thanks,
Kevin
