Date Night Hunt
« on: September 27, 2008, 05:49:11 AM »
It seems I've gotten my wife hooked on hog hunting.  We were talking about getting a sitter this weekend so we could have a little time to ourselves.  And she asked if for our "date night" we could go hunt some pigs.  Yea!  It is one of the few places that is completely quiet and we can really spend some time together.  We had fun and got three hogs.  The bigger sow in the first pic was hers.

Nice date! That looks like a handirifle...what caliber?  I am thinking about using mine in 243 on hogs this year. Do you worry about a quick followup shot if needed?

Jal, yes it is a handi in .223.  It's what she uses and I take it occasionally.  I shoot my handloads in both the handi and my AR.....55gr Sierra GameKing SPBT's pushed by 20.9grs of H4198.  They are very effective and don't destroy too much meat on the smaller ones.

As for follow-up shots, I practiced a lot and got to where I could reload without looking that way I can keep my eyes on the pigs.  The handi will make you place that first shot well.  I take shots with the AR that I would not take with the handi.  I have been able a couple of times to get a second shot off and make a good shot, though.   I carry a pistol, though, because sometimes I'm not fast enough.  When we go together I usually take the AR, let her take the first shot and then clean up whatever I can.

My brother-in-law has a handi in 243 and he and I have gotten as many as 5 hogs in one afternoon with our two handi's.  They're great, just carry a pistol....just in case.  I had a big one charge me the other day...check it out in the Hog/Wild Boar Hunting forum.  I had the AR, but I was glad to have the pistol as well.

That would be a tough call for me. On the one hand I would like my wife to enjoy something that I enjoy. On the other hand I enjoy the quiet. ;D

We have a 5 year old daughter and 1 year old twins....it is quiet when we're out there.
