91/59, M38, or Yugo SKS?
« on: September 22, 2008, 09:14:25 AM »
I could use some help with the next purchase. 91/59, M38 or Yugo SKS(yes its the GL model)? All in VG condition. Probably a little coyote hunting, plinking. I don't reload as of yet due to lack of distractions(kids).

AS a "milsurp" guy primarily I will answer your question in 5 ways :)

First is for a Coyote gun--none of the above but if taking one would be the Yugo only as it is a repeater so your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th shot may hit.  Not too much distance here but a good option and cheap to mount optics.  One of my 59/66 with a scope is surprisingly accurate.

Back to the Q of which to get of the 3.  First up is the 91/59 in my oinion.  I don't know if more rare than the M38 but you just don't see them too often and us Milsurpers will get the BEST example we can find and stuff it in the closet forever.  This means the value over time will increase.  Second choice is M38....again BEST example you can get in a correct M38 stock is a good buy.  The M38's have had accuracy concerns in my opinion....I have one which shoots like a dream but I couldn't "yote hunt with it.  Last on my list of milsurps is the 59/66 maybe its cause I have too many...maybe because there are many stateside....maybe cause its justy me?

However the SKS may see a nice increase in supposed value after November??  This may depend on legislation more than Milsurp collectors.

Overall this is my evaluation.  I would have to stick to my order as the other thought is the 7.62x54r is a potent round for many purposes.   You can easily handle any game in lower 48 with this choice.....the x39 is ratehr "whimpy" for hunting purposes.

As always YMMV.......do like I do and buy them all :)  (except I don't have a 91/59 yet :'()

I've owned and sold off all three at various points.
I personally liked shooting the 91/59's and M38's much more. Alot more oomph to the 7.62x54 round.

I would get either one, or both, and use for plinking. IMO, for coyote hunting I'd get a modern rifle with a good scope

Thanks for the input. I have the modern rifles for serious hunting, but I like to think/hope I could use any firearm I buy if the situation presented itself and I was so inclined, thus the coyote reference. I'm making the progression I think a lot of us do when we are looking for more of a challenge. I looked at the 59/66 again last night and it is a lighter wood with excellent bluing, bore good, especially compared to the other ones they were pushing as "very good". But why stop with one right? That 91/59 had my name written on it...
