Possible World Record Deer Found

Walking Record?

It is always exciting at Buffalo County Outfitters. This summer is no exception....check out the video. Thanks to Field & Stream for hosting the video for all whitetail freaks to enjoy!

I love whitetail hunting and seeing monster whitetails more than any other game animal, and this would just trip my trigger or bow string.

Extremely poor excuse for a video which makes judging trophy potential difficult but I'd be willing to bet money it is NOT a new world record walking around out there. It is a truly fine trophy but not close to replacing the world record and in fact likely won't even match the Jordan buck.

It has only five points (four up and brow) on one side and so that extra long tine on the other side gets dropped from score in typical B&C counting. They mention stickers which aren't clear in the video but if it has them they too detract from the B&C score.

My guess is it will not even net 200 so certainly the current record is in no jeapordy from him.

We've been skeptical up here in WI ever since the video came out. The poor quality of the video appears to a lot of guys as a little fishy. Somehow faked?

Supposedly, Buffalo County Outfitters has/had a few openings for this season and is/was trying to cause a stir to fill remaining slots. Who knows?  Doesn't really matter to me either way.  One thing for sure, there are some monster bucks up here in WI and especially Buffalo County

All I know is that I won't be shooting a deer like that.....but then again, you never know, right.....

I'm by no means an expert at scoring a set of antlers, but Field and Stream seems interested in it if it scores higher than the Milo Hansen’s world record typical buck.  So we'll let the experts decide on this one as I haven't been there and done that, so to speak.  I just posted this out of interest and for those that want to follow this one.  But your right about the quality of that video, as they should have used an HD camera set up to record that.

If that Outfitter faked this, they will be the laughing stock of sportsman every where.

I never have been impressed with the way the scoring system works. I think its bull there is such a thing as deductions. If the animal grew it, then count it. The score should be the total inches of antler, period. How can you say one rack is smaller than another just because it has more deductions, but more antler? How can Milo Hansons buck be a world record when there has been some freaks shot that have way more antler?

Anyways, that is a beautiful buck regardless of how it scores!

Terry I don't understand it either.

Some monster bucks have been havested at less than fair chase conditions (fenced or canned hunt), and those of course don't count.  These are the kind of things that cause arguments and seperation between hunters.  I get excited about whitetail hunting period, and if I had the means I would travel to hunt nothing but whitetail from Montana to So. Texas back over to Wisconson and everything in between.

I also disagree with the B&C and P&Y scoring system. It gives heavy credit for width of antler which is just a freak of how they grew and not antler. It deducts for lack of symmetry even tho by their very nature antlers are not symmetrical. They punish extra growth not add for it. I just totally disagree with the system but it is the most widely used and recognized out there.

I've done extensive study of deer racks and for many years at the B'ham deer exhibtion would walk down the wall of racks looking only at rack not the scores shown well below them. I'd guesstimate their scores then look to check my accuracy. I got to the point where I seldom missed by more than 8 to 10 points on any rack regardless of confirmation of it typical or non typical. I make no claim of expert status but am a pretty good judge of antler score from the amount of study put into it using racks scored by B&C measuring teams and teaching myself to rough score them by looking at them. Many top guides have learned to do the same both in the US and in Africa and give you a really good guess on the score.

Hanson's buck has more vertical tines than this buck by far and all are enormously long at least as long as those on this buck. He is a basic 5x5 and would be scored as such. Thus any extra tines over and above ten whether long or short are not gonna be additions but rather subtractions from final score. In fact this one might score better as a non typical than as a typical but since the video quality is so poor that can't be told from it. I didn't see those stickers they claim are every where. I did see clearly an extra long tine on one main beam not matched on the other. Milo's buck has matching tines on both sides and more of them and is one of the most symmetrical large buckts ever measured. That really is the reason and the only reason really it beat the Jordan buck.

I have never been into scoring antlers myself ever.  I admire them like this guys that he got in Iowa, and to me this is a Whitetail Freak and an awesome trophy.

But would this rack get deductions?

I love the freaks too. I have never killed one, but anytime I dream of big buck, they have kickers and drop tines.

Oh yeah lots of them. It would clearly score higher as a nontypical than as a typical. As a typical those extra brow tines and those long points that do not go upward off the main beam but instead point inward would be deductions as would the stickers. Stickers and kickers are both deductions on a typical score for a rack.

But as a nontypical you score the basic rack then add the oddities rather than deduct them.

I didn't get that impression from the rack. I think it was just the poor quality of the video and all the movement of the camera that gave you that impression. He looked to be in hard antler to me.

They talk about this deer in the newest edition of Field & Stream.  They talk to several whitetail experts, and they are split down the middle on it.  Some of them say exactly of GB said about the rack and estimate to net 190+ at the most, but not 200.  The other camp says that the deductions would be very slight, and gross score it 230-240, and estimate the net at between 215-220.

Know one will know until it gets killed, or someone finds some sheds to score.

In the article in F&S, the owner of the operation said that it's a good thing that the camera was on a window mount, as it was shaking bad enough already.  If he'd been holding the camera, he said that you wouldn't even be able to tell that it was deer, as he was shaking that bad.

the video was shot at 500 yards which is probably the reason for the poor quality.  even a a ten point frame the Ky state record misses the world record by 3 inches and is a ten point.  And the one in the video looks better then it does im on the 200 + side on this one. it was also shot on august 9 so it was still in the growing stage and still has a few weeks of growing to do.

Here is a Whitetail recently harvested from Buffalo County Wisconson so it is entirely possible that the buck in the video is a whopper for sure.

Wisconsin giant! Enjoy fellas!

I was in Frankfort, KY earlier this summer, at the Salatos Wildlife Refuge, where the mount of the KY state record is on display, and I have to say, that buck in the video definitely looks bigger in every way than the KY record.
