Lasercast bullets for 44 mag.
« on: October 22, 2008, 03:09:17 PM »
I just picked up some Lasercast 240 grain SWC bullets from Cabella's the other day.  They say on the box that they will not lead my barrel no matter what.  Do any of you have any experience with these bullets?  Are these considered "hard cast" bullets?  I was somewhat surprised with the low cost.  Does anyone have any good loads for whitetails with this bullet, or is this not a good bullet to hunt with?  Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

"they will not lead my barrel no matter what"

Good luck with that. I lived in Lasercast country and have shot a lot of them in years past. Unless they've changed lubes I'd either wash the hard wax lube off and relube with Javelina (my usual practice with commercial cast bullets). I usually then load them over 21 gr 2400 with WLP primers in WW cases which give around 1300 fps from 6" barreled revolvers.  That will kill any deer walking if you put the bullet in the heart/lung.  Or I would tumble them in LLA if loads were going to be in the 1000 fps range.  Loaded over 8.5 gr Unique they run about 950 fps or over 9 gr they run right at 1000 fps out of a 6" barrel. At close range either of those loads will also kill any deer walking with a well placed shot.  I've never recovered any of the 2400 loaded bullets from deer (150+ blacktail and mulies) as all were through and through shots.

I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any deer or hog with them.  They're not all that accurate in either of my 44's, a bisley blackhawk or super redhawk.  I did lube with Lee liquid and had some pretty good groups with 12 grains of Unique.

Anyone who would tell you that will lie about other things as well. Still they should do just fine so long as you find a load your barrel likes but they might lead your barrel in spite of the claim. If it leads with other bullets it will with theirs as well.

I don't have experience with the Lasercast in the .44 mag yet, but I do use them in the .357, .41 mag, .45 LC and .45AR with good results. However, most of my loads are in the 800-1000fps range.

I have also tried them. I loaded them over 6 gr`s. of Bullseye, abt. 950 fps. from my old Super Black Hawk. They seem to shoot ok to me.

I load them in my SRH, I'm no cast bullet expert (just cheap)
I loaded them all the way down to 800fps and still got silver dust
when I cleaned with a wire brush. Could just be my barrel?
I finally decided it was just gonna happen, so I load mine
at 1200fps and shoot the Hell outta them  ;D when I get
feeling guilty I put 6-12 jacketed bullets through it and clean
it spotless. They work just fine on deer and antelope, it's like
shoving a 1/2" pipe through them, blood trails even I can follow,
IF there not DRT.

Bullet diamiter has alot to do with accuracy what diamiter were these .429 , .430 , .431 Always know you barrel diamiter before using any cast bullets.

no, use .001 larger than the bore size.  Typically in .44 you'd use a .429 jacketed bullet and a .430 cast. Since it's possible for machining variations it's suggested to measure your bore by driving a soft lead slug down it to get the actual size ... after that the above rule of thumb should work for you.

I have used Laser-cast .431 diameter SWC bullets in my T/C Encore 44 Magnum barrel above 1400 FPS with not noticeable leading and excellet accuracy.  This bullet was a beveled base and most machine produced bullets are but they worked great for me.

Yes, use it for deer, you will have venison if you place the bullet well.

I know use the left over bullet for use in sabots in my T/C 209x50 Encore rifle.

You said you bought them cheap?  I paid $28 per 5 years ago, what did you pay?

The lasercast bullets are .431 any my gun (Freedom Arms) says it is .4295.

What do you think of this match up?

mray,

i'd try them.   they are a hard bullet; but i don't think you'll have a problem hurting the barrel if that's what concerns you.   if anything, you'll have a problem by not matching the working pressure of your handload to the working pressure needed by the hardness of your bullet.

take a look at.    www.leverguns.com/articles/leading.htm  to see some of the thinking about matching bullet hardness to your intended velocity and its required working pressure.
