A thread on another GBO forum about belly pistols made me think of this again.
Back in the early 70's when I had a gun shop one of my suppliers talked me into adding a couple of 380 ACP pistols to my order that he was sure I would be happy with. Wouldn't tell me what they were, but the price was right so I went along.
2-3 weeks later he stopped in to hand deliver my order, which he often did, but had a sly grin when he handed me the boxes with the pistols in them. Great little pistols - like miniature Government 45's and very well made, nice cut checkered walnut scales, smooth action and trigger. The two had consecutive serial numbers too. So I took one out to the range to try it. It shot so well I decided to keep both of them for myself and my wife instead of putting them in the case in the shop. Used mine as a CCW backup for a while, wife never shot hers, but I eventually sold both of them a couple of years later as they just were not used much and I had other toys I wanted to buy.
Now the cry in the milk thing... These two were F.I. 380 ACP's that were out of the 100 prototypes made for Colt by F.I. (marked Colt Pony Model D). The deal between them fell through and somehow my supplier got his hands on 3 of them. It took Colt another dozen years or so to bring the same pistol out as the Mustang.
Wish I had those two back, although I did get a small fortune for them when I sold them. No idea what they would be worth to a collector now.
