need specific 480 cast bullet load
« on: September 23, 2008, 04:36:01 PM »
using 375 gr. gas checked wide flat nose, brnl. hardness about 22.   I originally wanted to work up an h4227 load, but seems its discontinued.  is there a similar powder I can use? It would have given around 1200fps at 33000 psi. which i thought was awesome.  I hate h110, lil'gun, win 296, 2400,. titegroup looked promising. I'd like lowest report and pressure, with decent speed, and very good ignition. reliable with least amount of temp fluctuation problems.   h4227 was it, and even if I go a hold of some, Ijust can't bring myself to build my loads with a powder I will run out of. PLEASE HELP ME? ???

Since you seem to want to rule out all the logical choices as to what will get the job done I suppose you'll have to look into something a bit more abstract like maybe Ramshot Enforcer.  I've never tried it but let's face it, you've asked for an answer and then tied our hands.

I use probably more aa9 in mag pistol loads then anything. If you have access to surplus powder theres some wc297 available that has about the same burn speed as 4227. 4227 is not discontinued. What they did was discontinue the imr 4227 and the imr and hodgdon 4227 are both the same and use the formula for h4227 which is no sweat to me as ive allways prefered the h4227 anyway.

Loyde, so are you saying that h4227 is now marketed under the name imr4227, but still the same, and that the old imr4227 isn't made anymore??  In other words, use new imr4227 in place of h4227 with load data for h4227?   If so, dosn't that mess up a hole lot of old load books?  please let me know if I understand this correctly. I don't want to get blowed up! if this is correct, it's good news for me. thanks.

thats what hodgdon told me. Id still work up loads slowly as any 4227 tends to vary from lot to lot a little more then some other powders.
