Vise Question
« on: September 27, 2008, 07:43:12 PM »
Does anyone have a suggestion for me for a loading bench rifle vise for cleaning Handi's? I have my first Handi on the way and have never owned a break open single shot rifle and was wondering what has worked out for you? Thanks -g

I have been using the MTM jobber for the past couple years.

Before that I have a DILLON gun vice.

BOTH worked great.

I've been using a Tipton for several years, it's well suited for the Handi to lock it in the open position over the center rest with the butt clamp.  ;)

Thanks guys. I'd better get online and pick one up before the stork arrives with the new addition to the family. Along with all the other cheese. Teflon coated rod and bore guide, jags, JB paste, and other assorted wants. -gary

Tim,
That Tipton look identical to the old Dillon I had years ago!!

Wonder if they made it for them??

I see Tipton makes two models. The $40 ver and $100 one . It appears in the various ads that the $100 flavour is the one that has a center rest, while the inexpensive one does not show one in the picture on Midway's site? -g

I can't be sure of it but I kinda suspect Tipton makes most all of them that look generally like the one in Tim's post. I got mine like it many many years ago from Midway USA back when I still did business with them.

There is another perhaps the one mentioned by PigBoy Crabshaw that he reported costs about $100 which has an actual center rest that sticks up quite high and to me at least seems far more appropriate for a break action gun like the TCs or NEFs. I've seen it in Midway USA commercials on TV but have never seen one first hand.

The padded rest in the photo in Tim's post is intended for you to rest the pistol grip area of non break action long guns on and works well for that. Personally I find it much less useful for break action rifles and prefer to just use sand bags at the hinge point for them.

I've thought about trying one of the adjustable Tiptons, but they cost more than twice as much as the regular model at $100, the regular model works fine if you position the butt with the center rest just behind the grip area with the barrel broke open, the butt clamp holds it open fairly well on most stocks. I've thought about making a wood riser for the center rest, but haven't yet.

While there is little wrong with these portable vises, they do however slide around and need to be clamped down when cleaning barrels especially when using a tight patch. They are not solid and require one hand to hold them while you trying to manage cleaning with the other.

A 4" swivel base RECORD #3 vise bolted to a bench is one of the most useful tools in a loading room. Had mine for many years. At times when I need a a cleaning vise at the range I use a drill press vise clamped to to the shooting bench in a solid manner.  Again this vise has multiple uses. Both these vises must have hard rubber faces on the jaws.

A gun tinkerer can hardly do without a bench vise. Since I only use
moly plated bullets I rarely have need to clean away from home except when thing get wet. For that I don't need a vise of any sort.

Thanks for your opinions guys. I get the regular Tipton and try and mod a riser in the middle. If the results are handi worthy, I'll post pics. -g
