1,100 arrested in California immigration sweep

SANTA ANA, California (AP) — U.S. immigration authorities said Monday they arrested more than 1,150 people in California in a three-week sweep, the state's largest of its type since since 2003.
The sweep targeted immigration violators including those who have ignored deportation orders or returned to the U.S. illegally after being deported.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said it was the largest such action by fugitive enforcement teams in California since the squads were formed in 2003.

Kice said of the 1,157 immigrants arrested statewide, 595 had outstanding deportation orders and 346 had prior criminal convictions. Those arrested were from 34 countries, she said.

The raids, which ended Saturday, produced 436 arrests in the San Francisco area, 420 in the Los Angeles area and 301 in the San Diego area.

In recent years, immigration officials have increased enforcement at factories, offices and homes. One of its major pushes has been to target illegal immigrants who have flouted deportation orders.

It's about time we did more on illegal immigration.  More needs yet to be done.

It's a good start but considering the number of illegal immigrants in the state of Kalifornica it's just a drop in the bucket. I'd like to see them do that here in Chicago.

The illegal immigrant problem is severe with the welfare programs initiated by the feds with state support.  But here is the real problem, notice the number of the 1150 illegals who ignored deportation, the number of convicted criminals, and the number of different nationalities.  941 of them were convicted criminals or evaded deportations orders, which is a criminal violation.  We certainly do not want any of these people in our country and all of them should be black listed for life from ever receiving consideration for legal immigration.  We should also take notice of the countries from which these illegals came from.  Some better method of security has to be revised to prevent further illegal immigration from these countries.

If they come back, I hope they'll be treated as I was with an Oregon State Trooper who handed me a plane ticket back to Alaska in the mid 70's.  He told me not to be caught in the State of Oregon anytime within the next 6 months.  I told him that was unlawful and he told me that some crime would be pinned on me and that I would stay in Oregon for a long time if caught.  I asked him immediately thereafter, what time the plane left.

Maybe not, but the Trooper was very effective in getting his meaning across.  I was with a group of linemen taking the first 1,000,000 volt transmission live line maintanace course in the US.  This was an experimental line just outside and south of Trojan Nuclear Power Plant.  There were 7 Alaskans selected out of a class of 50 throughout the entire US.  Alaska's economy was booming and we all had surplus cash to spend in Astoria, Or, when the town had 50% unemployment due the spotted owl debacle.  We were spending a lot of money in the bars after class and having a good time as young men do in their twenties.  We did not get into any trouble ourselves, but it seems that we bought a lot of drinks and danced with a lot of women in the town.  I guess from that there were quite a few DUI and domestic disputes with significant others.  The State Troopers determined that we were the grass cause of these problems and decided to resolve it internally.  That is the reason for the airplane tickets back to Alaska.  Then on top of that we were fined $2500 by the local union in Alaska for inappropriate representation of its members.  But boy, oh boy did we have fun.  By the way, I was validictorian of that first class.  No where in the US is transmission voltages in excess of 750,000 volts today.  There were not many classes after that so I am one of very few who are qualified to work on 1,000,000 volts live.  Sorry to get off topic but felt the posters needed an explanation.
