I have a few sets of electonic muffs. Buy peltors if you get a set there hands down the best ones out there. i dont think there very practical for hunting though.  I also have a pair of walker game ears i use sometimes. I dont wear them when bumming around the woods but have used them in dear season when actually hunting. the work great but its hard for me to get used to something in my ear. Only real downside to them is there EXPENSIVE!!

Lloyd, been considering a pair of these for some time now, if you would PM me what they cost you and which kind you have, please?

I have used them when hunting, almost scary, hear monsters creeping through the woods and other weird sounds,...........but, you sure can hear the deer walking towards you too...........

I have a set of the Peltor Tac 6 muffs that I use when hunting. I keep them up off my ears until I see or hear something, then just slide them on if I see something. For use on the range, they need to be doubled up, but in the field they work great for me.

Another vote for Peltor Tac 6. I have had a pair for 5 years now and wear them hunting all the time. Theres a 4 lane hwy about 3 miles from where I hunt and with the volume all the way up I can hear every car that goes by, but a little ajustment on the volume and they are just fine. Plus during deer season here in Iowa in december they keep my ears warm...

I have a set of the ProEars that I used whenever I go to the range.  They have worked so well on the range that I have used them hunting.

They protect my hearing very well and I am grateful but must agree with Graybeard about all the noises you can pick up with those things turned on.  Voices and gunshots are muted; the sound of your scratchy beard on your shirt collar is not muted, nor is your stomach rumbling, or the hair on your head (fer sum ov us...) rubbing against the inside of your hood.  Not being able to wear my favorite hat on accounta the earmuffs (is OK), I just got a bigger hat...

Unfortunately I am almost afraid to move when I am wearing them and waiting or watching an animal approach.  I know whitetail have hearing 7 times more acute than humans so how could it possibly be that all the noise I make when I turn my head doesn't scare them off or at least alert them???????

Any of you ever heard that 400 lb squirrel crashin' through the woods and the sound of one Whitetail approaching makes me think of Paul Bunyun's giant blue Ox, Babe.  And please, fer da luvagawd, don't ax me to walk anywhere with those things turned on - the sound of one of my feet crashing down through frozen grasses must carry for at least 20 miles.  Just about the funniest thing I have ever seen is two old fat men, me and my huntin' buddy, tryin' to tip-toe through the frozen fields so as not to make any noises when going up to our stands, while wearing those ProEars.  I never imagined the sound of frost crunching was anywhere akin to the sound of steel I-beams being ripped apart.  Mikey.

Ladobe, I could have written that post!   :o  Add to that firing rockets and having a door gunner firing his M60 with the muzzle next to your head and I guess I'm lucky I can hear at all!  Like you say, when I started wearing them I heard things I haven't heard in years!  But I still have a problem estimating the distance to a sound.  Direction is no problem!   ;D

P.S.  Welcome home Brother!   ;)

Welcome home Brothers!  ;) I was one of the guys making the noise with the M60. Good to hear that welcome even after all this time. My hearing aids have a circut that can be programmed to shut down with noise, but the guy doing the programming just can't seem to get it through his head  just how fast that has to happen, so I am using the electronic muffs. The extra noise does take some getting used to, but working with the volume helps. I was pretty discouraged when I tried them while still hunting the first time, and realized that it still was not what the deer can hear!  :o

Hey there,

I'm only 29 but I was stupid during the years from when I was about 20-24 and did a lot of handgun shooting out in the country with no protection so I figured it was time to get some electronic muffs.  After thoroughly researching and reading reviews, I settled on the Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs ... (I think someone before suggested them).  They are only 65 bucks or so and are slim and extremely comfortable.  They make shooting both at the range AND in the woods more fun.  I will be using them hunting for the first time this deer season and KNOW they will be excellent.  No static, loud, clear amplification and great battery life.  They even have an input jack to put am MP3 player in them if you want (which might be more useful at a NASCAR event rather than hunting but the option is nice).

i HIGHLY recommend these muffs.  You won't believe your ears when you first try them.  I got mine at Cabelas.

I have the Peltor, which work great, if you are not wearing a wide brim hat. Here in the southwest I've learned to wear a wide brimmed hat in the summer.  I should have bought a set that would fit the back of my head. Maybe I'll modify an old hat to accommodate the hat. Hats are cheaper.

Has anybody modified a set of shooting muffs to work with a GMS radio? The ideal situation would be to have the super ears and yet be able to whisper into a throat microphone and talk to your friends or hunting companions without everybody else hearing it.  There has to be a spot in the Peltor circuitry that allows a connection for audio input. Anybody done this or seen it done?

I ordered the Pro Ears Stalker Dimension 1 Plus from Cabela's. I will post a report after testing. Thanks for all of the input.

Well my sportears are like black hearing aids, found out which battery they take A 312 if anyone has them and is looking to replace batteries.  The nice thing is that when in the field I can just switch these off to protect my hearing when shooting.

These things, I swear I can hear a fly fart with these, as they also second as hearing aids while my regular aids are getting fixed... $510.00  Make sure you keep your inner parts dry and free of moisture.

I have Dillon Electronic Ear  muffs which are made by Peltor & the Peltor behind the head model so I can wear a hat while shooting .

I received my ProEars this week and will try them out tomorrow with the handguns and a walk in the woods. I will post my experience.
