.357 sb1-s35 Handi-rifle question
« on: October 18, 2008, 11:32:19 AM »
Does anyone have one of these new SB1-S35 357 Handi's? I know they come with the scope mount but are they drilled and tapped for sights? Is it a micro-groove barrell? How does it shoot? Can you shoot lead .38's? Thanks for any info you can share.

H&Rs have never had Micro-GrooveŽ rifling with 16 gooves , that's a Marlin only feature. The SB1-S35 comes with a scope rail only, it's not drilled and tapped for sights. Lot's of folks here shoot cast bullets in their 357s, I had my SB2 357 rechambered to 35 Remington, that's all I shoot in it. ;)

I have one and it shoots cast bullet .38 Specials really well.  It is not drilled and tapped for sights.  I got it really cheap from Bud's Gun Shop.  I love mine!

Left target 15 shots .38 Special junk reloads at 25 yards.

I have a H&R Micro Groove barrel, I was on a 22-410 combo rifle, so I guess they have used the Marlin barrels on the H&R's.  Larry

I'd like to look down the bore of the barrel Larry, many members here mistakenly refer to the shallow rifling in NEF/H&R bores as micro-groove, if they exist they must be rare,  My 2007 youth 22Lr Sportster has the normal H&R rifling like all the rest, the rifling in it doesn't look anything like a micro-groove bore which has 16 grooves ~.015" wide. But as usual, it's hard telling what they've done in the past.  ;)

PM me with your address and I will send it to you.  It is only about 16 1/2 inches long and very light, there is nothing I can do with it.  Larry

I took the 2 new 357 barrels out and put about 20 rounds through them at 20 yards.  Oldest boy and I went and set up camp for the start of general deer and elk season next Sunday.  Won't go into the details, but wound up with legs for the wall tent frame about 3 in. to short. :(  As I have said here before, I can measure something 3 times and still cut it to short. :-[  Anyway, it was getting dark and just wanted to see if they functioned OK.  Had mounted some of the Simmons 2.5 shotgun scopes on them that Tim forced me to buy.  ;D  They worked great.  Had them both on the bull in just a few rounds, didn't seem to move as much as it said for each click, but that close, it messes me up to try to count.  More of that measuring thing, I guess.  Brass was just a little sticky pulling out, need to clean the chambers good.  Hadn't noticed before, but LilGun puts a pretty good fireball out of the rifle barrel too.  With those scopes mounted forward like they are, didn't miss the lost hammer extensions at all. :-\  DP

Tim, the new 30-30 barrels look suspiciously microgroove to me.......... and I have a few Marlins at home to compare them to.

I have a 2007 Marlin made 357mag barrel too, it has typical wide lands and grooves, Marlin .35cal Micro-groove has 12 grooves, .055" wide and .0028" deep, but it's always possible they've changed the rifling since mine was made too.   Marlin 30-30 Micro-groove bores have 12 grooves, .040" wide and .0028" deep.  ;)

In the cheap .38special ammo do the full wad-cutters shoot good or the round nose shoot better out of this rifle?

Mine will shoot anything you put in it very well, I reload my own wadcutters and my friends are all amazed at how accurate and fun it is to shoot.

I load some 125gr RFN cast with 3.5gr of tightgroup and shoot cans alot. there isn't a can safe around here out to close to 100 yards.

You know someone likes what they are shooting when they giggle after every shot and don't want to hand your rifle back.
