500 S&W Mag
« on: October 02, 2008, 12:46:35 PM »
Does anyone have a NEF in 500 S&W?  How is the accuracy?  How's recoil compared to the pistol?

mine does around 2" at 50 with 400 grain magtech's... The recoil is probably close to a 12ga shotgun... The 350grain hornady's kick pretty hard...

The best shooting .500's are the ones that say 45-70 on the side of them ;)
Just get the 45-70 and be done with it.

they are not that bad on the recoil. i would compare it to my H&r ultra slug in 12 ga. the accuracy is not that bad. i think if you shot the gun and get comfortable with it make a great shot. i live in indiana and they now allow us to use them as of last year. on the frist day i took mine in the feild i shot a doe at about 160 yards. with open sight. it was a little more behind the shoulder than i would have liked it to be. but it only took about 10 steps before she droppied. so i'm happy!

Mine does about 2" groups at 100 yards with a 385 grain Remington Ultra Bonded Coreloct bullet pushed by Lil'Gun powder.

I havn't shot mine for accuracy yet, just test fires.
Recoil was about like a 270.
I havn't tried one in a hand gun and really don't think I want to.
My 12" 445 super mag in a contender is enought for me.
When they go above 45 caliber I want a shoulder stock on it!

Try these out for a "kick"

Double Tap Ammo
500 S&W Magnum 350gr. Controlled Expansion JHP 20rds. $37.95
The most powerful handgun load in existence! A lighter bullet that really moves! This Controlled Expansion Jacketed Hollow Point is made to expand AND keep its weight even at these speeds. Our testing showed 1.21" expansion while giving 19" of penetration. A perfect loading for deer as well as elk.

Caliber : .500 S&W Magnum

Bullet : 350gr. Controlled Expansion JHP

Ballistics : 1975fps - 3032 ft./lbs. - 8.375" bbl. :o

Mine shoots into 2" or less at 100. After much looking to find the recipe it liked. Most loads shot 3-4" out of the box @ 100.

I tried hard to make it shoot 500XTP SP's. I had them up to an honest 1800 with a chrono at about 10feet Any closer and the blast nullified results. I almost settled for them when Tim turned me on to Ranger Ricks line of cast lead bullets. I settled on the 440Gr and a med load proved most accurate thus far.

In reflection, I guess it was fairly consistent, just not as "tight" as I hoped for initially.

I've shot the 350gr Hornady @ 2150fps, 440gr Cast Performance @1920fps and the 700gr Ranger Rick @ 1430fps in mine, accuracy is about 1½-2" with all of them, recoil is no fun from the bench without some weight and a good pad added to the stock.  ;)

I haven't built any hand-loads for mine yet... but the factory stuff (Magtech) I've shot would group about 2" at 75 yards... the limit of my back-yard range, and about as long a shot as I'm likely to get at a feral hog.  ;D
