40x trigger adjustment ?
« on: September 29, 2008, 10:56:41 AM »
I just picked up a 700 XCR Compact tactical .223. The manual that came with the gun is for regular 700's and not this particular gun. It does not have any instructions pertaining to the 40x trigger .

I am assuming that the screw that is exposed in front of the trigger is the adjustment. And I think turning it counterclockwise is lowering the pull weight.........but I am not for sure. I have no idea if a certain amount of turns is needed or not ? I am trying to get it in the 1.5-2# range .

Any advise would be great !!!

What is the trigger pull weight now? My 40x was about 2 1/2 lbs and I took it to my gunsmith hoping for 1 1/2 lbs also, I should get it back sometime later this week. I turned that same screw counterclockwise and couldn't get the pull less that 2 1/2 lbs I mentioned. 1 1/2 sounds just right for a bench rest gun. I'm sure someone here knows a lot about these triggers.

Yeh........I guess I am confused. I turn the screw and can feel very little difference........although I don't have a pull gauge. I know with my Sako and Tikka........I can tell a noticable difference with just a little adjusting. The 40x does not seem to be that way..........although.....it's a nice feeling trigger .

Rem. claims the trigger is externally adjustable , but I don't feel much difference going between the extremes of the screw travel either direction !

People who do not have a trigger pull gage should not mess around trying to adjust triggers. Yes the 40X trigger is externally adjustable and most as I recall adjust from a low of about one pound to a high of perhaps 2.5 pounds. No your finger can't really tell the difference so without a gage it's unless to mess around with it. Just going from memory I think you back it out to lower and screw it in to raise pull weight.

Got mine back from the gunsmith today. The trigger now breaks at a crisp 1 1/2 pounds. Just right for me. I'm certainly not going to mess with it.
