I have yet to bag anything with my wifes. She keeps it locked up :cry:
The guys at moose camp have taken a lot of moose over the years with them. It's the most popular gun is camp. Ranges are typically short, but one was taken at 250 yards a few years back, he doesn't handload either.

My BLR is in .358, so I can't comment directly on the success of one in .308, but a hunting buddy who uses only factory ammo has had a lot of success with his, and from what I remember, all his kills have been clean and quick.

Year: 1980
The Place: Jackson County, WV
The Target: 6 Point Whitetail at 85-90 meters, shot 1 hit spine and deer dropped in tracks, shot 2 was coup de grace to finish it. I seem to recall the bullets were Remington 165 grain PSP. First deer ever taken; felt glad :grin: /sad :cry: . Had good venison that year.

That BLR was a nice, handy, easy carrying, accurate rifle. Wish I still had it. I really like the 308/7.62.

Okay, you've gotten my curiousity up about the BLR 308. Do you have a Belgium or Jap model? I handled both today at different shops and like the feel and appearance of the Belgium a little better. Does the Belgium have a steel receiver as opposed to the alloy Japan model? I think the Belgium had a straight lever as opposed to the curved lever of the Japan. The Belgium also had a barrel band around the front stock/barrel. Will there be a noticeable difference in recoil of the 308 BLR to say a 30-06 Savage bolt action? I really like the light weight of the BLr as opposed to bolt guns. Recoil pad appeared thicker on the Belgium model also. Any other differences you know of?

I've never used a 308 before, so what difference can I expect versus the 30-06. I have heard that many police department snipers prefer the 308 in their rifles. Much difference in available factory loads? Is the bullet trajectory for these loads similar? Would there be much difference in effectiveness on game the size of Elk, if I am able to go out West next year.

What about the price I found on one. The Belgium 308 I saw had been used for hunting - a few minor dings in stock, but did not appear to be abused. Blueing looked very good. Lever action appeared to work okay. It also appeared that whoever drilled the buttstock for the swivel stud was a hair bit off center of the stock. The BLR has a Redfield 2-7x mounted on top of it. The man is asking $500 total price for the BLR/scope. Is this a good, average, or fair price on this? Anyone having experience with these BLR's, please speak up, as I would like to hear first hand infor regarding your thoughts on the BLR 308 Belgium.

wildman, most of the clean BLRs in my area go from $400-600 depending on shape. The BLR 81s are bring more, start abit $500. Add the value on base ,ringsand scope and you be be in the ball park. The difference between the 308 and 06 is about 200 fps. and more recoil.

A friend of mine and my Dad's(former Dad's co-worker until the man retired) is drop dead, the most no BS deer hunter we've ever met. He has several deer to his credit that he's killed that actually came out and bedded down around him and he took 'em! His weapon?

A Belguim Browning BLR in .308. As a matter of fact, his load of choice for many years was Remington's 180 gr. round nose core-lokt. Modern day "experts" would scream and cry at such logic but to the most successfull, knowledgable deer hunter that Ive met....you can't argue with success.

bought my dad one for a retirement pressent about 8 years ago. since then he has killed 14 dear with it. he uses either my reloads with a 165 speer or sierra bullet or fed premium when i get lazy.

I have one in 358, given that, don't need one in 308, but it is still a great round for deer and black bear and pigs if you like those little bores.

I have a BLR in 270. It is REALLY slick and can take a groundhog at 200 yards

I have shot a bull Shiras Moose, 3 elk, plenty of deer and antelope, 1 blk bear, coyotes and rabbits with my pre-81. X-bullets to cast 113 fp all group good. Hunting bullet is 150 gr for Deer or Antelope, 180 X-bullet for larger. John.

I bought my father a used Belgium BLR 308 for a CHRISTmas present a few years ago, He looks funny carring both his faithful 300 Savage model 99 and the Browning in the woods.Go figure.

Got my pre81 about 30 years ago. Didn't carry it much for first few years then got tired of fumbling in and out of trucks and brush with bolt guns and learned better. Had a few years off for bows and pistols, but finally tagged 12-15 deer, 4 feral hogs, and a few feral Catalina rams. Lost count of javalina and varmints. Oh, few turkey, all head and neck shots. Just too handy. If I try anything tougher I'll switch from 150 gr Sierras to Barnes X or Partitions. My .257 has 3 deer and a few varmints. Just getting warmed up on my .223. Looking for a .358. BTW, my BLR's would be the last to go!

Cougar, to make it simple, works about same as a 30-06, makes
very slightly less damage. With 308, I dont hear the smack
of the bullet hit like a 30-06, thats about it. I use 150 gr factory loads
and have killed at least 30 deer with it. A day without a blr is like a day without sunshne.
