Was this a good idea?
« on: August 19, 2003, 04:46:03 PM »
I de-rusted a couple Victor double spring 4's with vinegar, worked great.  Then I gave one a coat of boilded linseed oil, I guess out of habit, as I do with so many garden tools.  Is the smell of the linseed going to spoil the set for raccoons, or make the trap a target for some digging??  Thanks for the help in advance... :D

Yes  coating the trap with linseed oil  will cause coon to dig it up.  Also a nbr 4 victor isnt the proper size trap for coons.  It is way too large.  If it was used on a drowning cable or wire it would work but is way overkill on trap size for a raccoon.

I hate to say this but the OLD fox is right on the money.  That #4 is a pretty good cat trap but it would catch a coon dang near around the neck.

Maybe i got my sizes goofed up, it's about 3 1/2-4 inches across the jaws, and they are squared off.  Think a coyote would try to dig it up, or shy awa??  Thanks.

Jeff,
If the trap only has a 3.5 - 4 inch jawspread then it will be way too small for coyotes. Personally I wouldnt set any trap for canines with any scent on it as you mentioned. Who knows, you might be able to catch a couple like that, but I dont like taking chances when I out there to catch critters. I think your best best would be to start over and not set canine traps unless you are sure they are free of any forien oders. Good Luck

A #4 dbl long has a jaw spread around 6.5 inches.  You must have a #2 or 11???

If you did manage to get a paw the coyote would  MOST likely pull out, destroy the trap or both.

Currently a 1.5 coil spring  (4.5 too 4 15/16 inside jaw) is the smallest trap recomended for coyotes. This trap is also 4 coiled.  You may catch one and even hold one but I think it is iffy.

Other than a blind trail set I'd bet a very large % of coyotes would locate the trap as it is now.  Re-boil it or put it in the dish washer and get the oil off.  Better yet check the forum classifieds or contact Boggy and get a couple larger traps.
