7mm tcu vs 7 x 30 barrel.
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:14:11 AM »
I've had a 24" 7mm tcu barrel for a few years now and love it. It's magna-ported so I can watch the bullet impact. I've never chronographed any loads but have seen others report getting up to 2700 fps with 120's with less than max published data.

I'm wondering if there is any advantage to stepping up my rifle barrel to the 7x30 Waters? (which I have in a 14" and love)
or is the tcu so effcient that wouldn't matter?

Thanks

I sorta doubt that 2700 fps with less than max loads. The problem is folks don't seem to understand what max really means some times. The .223 based cartridges can be pushed to much higher pressures than rounds like the 7-30 with it's much larger case head. You can safely get almost the same performance from both cases due to that if barrels are long enough and certainly yours is.

If you want or need more I'd suggest the 7 JDJ #2 on the larger and stronger .307 Winchester case. I think it delivers about the maximum you can safely get from a Contender.
