To Line-x spray a barreled action or not?
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:34:29 AM »
I’d be willing to bet this has been discussed a hundred or so times but I didn’t have very good luck searching for the answer I’m looking for so here the question is again. I found an older Savage Model 110 chambered in 7mm Remington magnum at a pawn shop that is cosmetically challenged but mechanically sound. I need a rifle that is as tough as nails for use around the farm. I’m considering spraying the barrel and upper half of the action with line-x brand spray on bed liner and camo paint the stock separately. Then refit everything, glass bed the action, and float the barrel. The question is: will a spray-on liner job on the barrel and action hurt the accuracy? The gun is fairly accurate as it is; with a little tweaking I think it’ll be a pretty good shooter. If accuracy will be reduced I’d rather just do a simple camo job on everything. I’d rather have accuracy in spite of everything else!

A little out of the ordinary I must admit.
Line-X is some pretty thick stuff.
You would have to releave the stock quite a bit to accommodate it.
I think I would prefer one of the spray on coating that wasn't quite so intrusive.
Maybe one of the military style coatings.
I don't know their names but I am sure others here will.

I don't know what it would do to accuracy but it sure would add some weight to it

I believe that Line-X is way too thick for such use and you'd have a devil of a time glass bedding it once coated I suspect. Bad idea in my opinion there are far better choices of products to use.

For a truck gun regular rustolum or krylon spay bombs work pretty good, They aren't as touch as some others but dings and scrapes can be touched up real easy, I like the black satin because there is no glare off it.

I'd use the Line-X on the stock, but not the metal.  Brownells offer several firearm spray coatings that are more durable than regular paint, and very easy to use.  Pretty easy on the pocket too.  I'd look into those.

It makes me sad to see any metal on a rifle painted, it just isn't a proper fnish for a gun.  There are some nice finishes, but they are are inferior to a good bluing or parkerizing job.  Parkerizing is my favorite finish, it is extremely durable and dead easy to do.  It does lack the gloss look of the paint and Blueing, but it does last nearly forever, is part of the metal and will not chip or flake off.  Larry

I like parkerizing too.  It's probably my favorite finish for a gun.

Plain old "Barbeque Black" spray paint works, and looks pretty good if you degrease the metal properly before you spray it on.  Easy to touch up as well.  Leave the Line-X for truck beds and tool handles.

Parkerizing and traditional bluing are the best looking finishes in my book to. But, I don't have the equipment nor the cash to do either correctly, I just built a oven to do bake on finishes like brownell sells and they look really sharp. As for a kick around truck gun finish I still think plain ole spay paint is hard to beat.

Money outlay really dictates alot of my choices and it don't usally match what I would really like to have.

I parkerized one myself its not real hard.... I made a stainless steel tank 30"x6"x6" and used a couple of hot water heater elements to heat it... If i had to do it all over again I would use a gas burner... As far as ingredients its phosphoric acid which is in naval jelly or jasco prep and prime... You can zinc phosphate it by using pennies or you can magnesium dixodie (i think thats what it s) Its the black stuff out of alkaline batteries... Just do some searches for home parkerizing it will tell you everything you need to know....

My parkerizing tank is a piece of 3 inch PVC pipe 4 feet long with a water heater element at the bottom, it is dead easy and works perfect, cost me about $20.00 total.  Larry

Midway sells a product called cerma coat. Somewere around $18 bucks a can. Degrease, roll up a piece of paper and put in the end of the barrel. Use light coats about 3 until it is completely covered 1 hour in the oven at 350, this is by far the tuffest spray on I have ever used. I have a couple of rifles going on 3 years and the finish looks as good as the day I put it on. Water proof too. For an old beater rifle, you can't beat it.
Here is a pic of 6.5 I did with it.
