« on: October 11, 2008, 01:05:54 AM »
i have a cva mountian man 50 cal muzzleloader made in USA useing 80 gr goex & .015 lubed cotton patch on .490 round ball
after firing run a dry patch down on cleaning jag & cant get the rod back out with out puting it in vice & yanking
do i need to sand down the brass jag ? if so how much smaller should it be
it seems the bore is larger the last 2" aganist the breach plug than the rest
it shoots good allmost cant get cleaing jag out though

I don't claim to be much on using muzzle loaders really but my question would be why are you running a dry patch down it to begin with? I guess I don't understand the purpose of that.

You could have some rough spots in the bore that snag the patch. Or maybe even a slight bit of rust.

Buy some Flitz (Polishing conpound) some 0000 steel wool and do about 50 to 75 passes. This will smooth out anything in there.  All of my muzzleloaders get this process.

I believe you have a CVA Mountain Rifle from the sound of the USA made barrel.  That will be a Douglas barrel and i am betting its the typical Douglas, rough rifling that they are known for.

I have a .54cal.
