Stock out of the box any CZ 452 is hard to beat. I have a 452 "Style" headed to my dealer. But it all
depends on your budget. I also have a Sako Quad but it was $100 more then the CZ......

appears semi-auto's have came a long way from my youth. they used to be good enough only to hit a possum in the head at 35 yds. lol

Your joking right?  ???

Just take your pick all of them currently marketed are perfectly up to the chore. Just pick one you like the looks of and that is in your budget and buy it with full confidence that once you find the ammo it likes best any misses on squirrels to 50 yards are your fault not the rifles.

For what you want on a fixed income budget I'd look at two rifles. At the accurate and reliable Marlin Model 60 semiautomatic ($150-175). And the ($175-225) Savage MKII with Accutrigger. The CZ452 is a really nice $350+ rifle but need a Brooks trigger kit ($15) installed and I assume the CZ to be out of your budget.

Now let's look at optics. For squrrels at 50yds 4x should be fine but it all depends on your eyes. Natchez is clearing out some discontinued Weaver 4x32 shotgun scopes. These were a very good quality $200+ scope on sale for only $80. Parallax is set for 50yds so they are perfect for a 22. If you have a bit more money to burn the Weaver RV7 Classic Rimfire is a high quality 2.5-7x28 scope at a bargain price of about $120. These are fully multi-coated LOW built optics not cheap Chinese junk.

Good luck!

For inexpensive and accurate a bolt action Savage MKII-F with Simmons .22 Mag scope.  I just bought a MKII-F without the accu-trigger at Wal-Mart for about $120.  Came with a good trigger.  It had to go to Savage for warrantee work, but they paid shipping both ways and fixed it perfectly.  The Simmons scope is about $50 with free shipping at Optics Planet.

Don't know where you live, but here in Oregon and Washington is a chain store caled "Joes" ( used to be called  G.I. Joes ). For the next week or so they are having a sale on the Winchester Wildcat bolt action .22's, for $99 ( after $30 mail in rebate ). They are a Russian made rifle,  with a good accuracy reputation, particularly if a trigger job is done. If cost is your concern, and it sounds like it is, this may be something to consider.
Like GB mentioned, most any .22, old or new, should do what you want. Maybe stay with bolts as being the most likely not to have quarks.

If you can spend ~$250, the CZ "513 basic" is one of the best deals out there on a new 22 bolt gun. It's a CZ 452 in its most simple form.

You can get a less expensive 22 bolt gun, but for accuracy, quality and value for the $$$, It's hard to beat a CZ.

My experiences with Marlin bolt action
« Reply #17 on: October 24, 2008, 03:09:49 AM »
A few years ago, I purchased two new Marlin bolt action 22s with clip feed. Without doing any work on the rifles, I was amazed at the accuracy of these very inexpensive ($95 new on sale) rifles, 3/4 inch at 50yds with std ammo. My target rifles do slightly better and my customized bolts and 10/22s are better, but these are good performers.  I suggest looking for a new on sale Marlin or Savage bolt or a used bolt action. Even an older used rifle, if basically sound, can be touched up to do very well.

The Marlins/Glenfields are accurate, but failures to feed and failures to extract are too common for me to want another.

As Graybeard has said, any new manufactured gun, bolt or semi auto will shoot within a squirrels head at 50 yards. You just have to find the ammo it likes. My Bother In Law borrowed a 10-22 to shoot a ground hog in his back yard. He said he had shot at it 4 or 5 times and missed every time. I am only talking 30 yards or less here. A large part of the reason was his poor marksmanship, but part of the reason was the action screw was so loose, the stock could be moved around on the barrel/action with quiet a bit of slop. If a modern gun will not shoot very well, there is usually a reason. Buy the best you can afford, in the flavor you like best. If you can only afford a $150 rifle, it will still shot good enough, it just will not look as pretty as some of the others. Years ago, I bought a Glenfield model 20 for $25 brand new on sale. It is not a pretty gun, it has a plastic trigger guard, stamped steel magazine, a stained Birch stock and a trigger that looks like it is just stamped out of 1/8" steel and a cheap chrome job on it. It was so cheap, I was going to keep it in the trunk of my car for impromptu shooting and such. Well, after I sighted it in, it shot so well that I did not want to have it banging around in the trunk. So even a cheap gun can shoot well. Good Shooting and Good Luck.
