Got the .223 Ultra ready
« on: October 13, 2008, 08:17:16 AM »
Painted all the metal parts white.  Used white shoe polish on the wood and scope.  That comes off with soap and water, or good ol WD-40.  We got three inches of fresh snow last night, on top of the two we already had.  Got those extended rings in the mail Saturday, and mounted the scope yesterday.  Ready to head to the range here in about 10 minutes.  Shimmed the rear ring so the site in at 200 yards will be in the top 1/3 of the scopes range, to give me plenty of room for dial in adjustments for extended ranges later.  Not sure I like this scope, it's a Center Point (Never heard of them) wife gave it to me.  She liked the lighted reticle, I'll see how it does, may be back home changing it this evening.

Either scope or mounts are bad.  Unable to center scope, ran out of adjustment.

Shimming one mount is scary, that misaligns the mounts and the only way the scope tube can conform is to bend unless the mounts are heavily lapped to bring them back into alignment, or use Burris Signature rings with their eccentric kit to build in the desired elevation. You may also be able get one of the 15moa bases made by EGW as mentioned in the FAQs, or just shim under the rear of the base.  ;)

Tim, this is a heavily armored scope.  I tightened the rings enough to hold it without biting into the actual scope tube.  On the next try I am going to try and shim the base.  If that does not get me what I want I will then be looking at other options.
