Pawn Shop find

Stopped off at a pawn shop Friday night and found an NEF .308 with gray laminated stock, I put it on layaway for a few days. The barrel is standard and the receiver is case hardened not blued. This is my first centerfire NEF rifle, I have a 17HMR Sportster. I checked the website and couldn't find any information on this rifle. I'm thinking about sending the rifle off to get a .308 bull barrel instead. Ant thoughts? Thanks, RonS

Since the Handi isn't normally offered with a case colored frame, only the SB2 Buffalo Classic/Target and the SB1 Pardner, and the old H&R cast iron frames were, it would be wise to check the left side of the underlug for the engraved last three digits of the frame's serial number, you'll likely have to remove the barrel to see it. It's possible someone may have put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame which isn't safe.  It would also behoove you to check the serial number prefix to see what barrels can be fitted to it(see FAQs), if it was made before 1999, they won't fit another 308 barrel to it.  :-\

I agree, that sounds like a great combo that they may have never made. Be careful, if it is a .308 barrel on an SB1 (shotgun) frame it good be VERY dangerous, and potentially deadly. There is the possibility it is a post 1999 Buff Classic frame and it MAY be safe, but be sure before you shoot it....<><....:)

Went back to the shop on Monday and checked my rifle out. At first the clerks seemed upset because I wanted to take the rifle apart before buying it and I explained to them why, then it was okay. The receiver is machined not cast, the serial # was NK222539, the barrel was marked SB-2 ultra 308. I called H & R this week and finally got to talk to a customer service rep and he told me the receiver was made in 1996 and I could upgrade the barrel to a 308 bull. Thanks, RonS

Mike, it was a fair deal for the rifle. I'll keep you posted about the barrel. I haven't found this handi in a 308 around here. Gun Shops around here don't stock the handis, just Dick's in 243 & 22-250. Most people don't seem interested in this style of rifle.

I would shoot the gun first, the best thing about a Handi is it's light weight.  The gray lams are hard to find.

Everyone thinks my .30/30 Handi is heavy.  Its about a pound heavier then my .44 Marlin.

Gettin off topic here, but to put some real numbers on Handi weights, I weighed my 30-30 and the 30-30AI, the camo wood stocked 30-30 weighs 7lbs-14oz, the straight camo lam stocked 30-30AI weighs 7lbs-10.5oz, both are scoped with 2-7x scopes, after deducting the scope weights, the 30-30AI weighs 6lbs-14oz, and the 30-30 weighs 7lbs-2.4oz, rings are a wash. A synthetic stocked 30-30 would weigh 6lbs-9oz with scope rail, minus the scope ring weights which is probably 3-4oz.

my unasked for opinion is that since the Handirifles are shorter than bolt action rifles yet weigh comprable amount then they are perceived as heavy.

An angular momentum kind of thing, you know, like figure skaters........I will go away now.

bluebayou, I'm confused. I picked up a local figure skater and she was much heavier than a Handi  :D
