Remington SPS .223 Question
« on: September 27, 2008, 11:31:03 AM »
I want to get one of the Model 700 SPS rifles in .223.  Eventually I'll want to put the barreled action in a CDL stock.  The barreled action is the same size as a .243 or .308 barreled action correct?

The action is the same but I'm not sure if the SPS barrel contour is same as the CDL. My SPS .223 is a Varmint rifle and that's really all I have bought in the SPS line is some varmint rifles none of the standard sporter weight guns.

The SPS sporters have the same contour barrel contour and actions as the short action ADL/BDL/CDL rifles.

Anyone know what twist they are using?  Will they handle a good range of bullet weights?

thanks for the info.  I just got and SPS in 25-06 for $499.00 with free Sightron 3-9x40 scope and a $50.00 mail-in rebate coupon. ;D  Add $10.00 off each box of ammo(2), and I'm a happy camper.  Like the weight of the rifle, not crazy about the looks of the stock, but will be good when the snow flyes.  DP

The .223 SPS Sporter Contour uses a 1 in 12 Right Handed Twist;

The .223 SPS Varmint Contour uses a 1 in 12 Right Handed Twist;

The .223 SPS Tactical with the 20" barrel uses a 1 in 9 Right Handed Twist.

I'm guessing the 1 in 12 will shoot 55 grain bullets ok.  Anyone tried the 62 grain bullets in them?

HI Swampman,

    I just purchased the Left hand version of the SPS Varmint in 223.  I have tried 62gr lead fmj's that I use in my DCM service rifle and they shot well.  If you are thinking of the SS109 green tips then that is a different story.  The steel penetrator makes the bullet long enough that a 1 in 9" twist is needed.

    The 12" twist is enough to stabilize even the winchester 64gr sp soft point if you are thinking deer.  The trick to the heavier weights is velocity.  This also means pushing the boundaries of the pressure envelope.  A 12" twist means that at the muzzle 1fps is 1rps X 60 = 60 rpm. Each bullet has a particular spin rate that is needed to stabilize it.  Really the only way to get the needed data for each bullet is to test.

    I will be using my rifle mostly for 300yd matches.  The guys around my area like to use the 1000yd reduced target, shooting against some of the old timers means attention to detail in every respect.

Paul
