8mm cases from 30.06 cases
« on: July 29, 2003, 03:15:54 PM »
This is my first post on GBO, great site!  I used to have a recipe for taking mil 30.06 brass and making it into 8mm  (8x57) brass.  I have lost this when older computers crashed at a very inconvenient time.  Does anybody know how to do this (with out a bunch of fancy equipment). Thanks, Rocky

this seems to be an awful waste of time! You would have to open the neck and size it to 8mm. Then trim it to a rough length. Load it and fire form it before trimming to final length.  Would the idea of running an 8mm/06 reamer into the chamber be worthwhile? Or sell the 06 brass and buy some 8mm.
the 8mm/06 gets about 150-200 more fps than the 8/57 using 150's,JUST a thought,  jh

Hi
Dead simply.  Done it heaps myself from WW2 vintage '06 brass.
Anneal the necks so they are nice and workable.
Lube them but not too much and run them quiet into the 8mm die.
Trim to length.
Real easy.
TCBK.
Cheers

Jeff

I found a Redding form and trim die speeds up the process - run a '06 case into it, hacksaw off what sticks out, FL size in 8X57 die, trim to length. Works great! Just watch out if you also have a 30-06 rifle, since they don't say 8X57 on the headstamp.

Hacksaw??????????

Just chuck a case trimmer in a drill press. No sense in working yourself to death. I mostly use my Forster since I have one, but the Lee cutter works fine. I make up pilots for the Lee from roundhead brass screws.

Do a couple of hundred an hour that way.

I couldnt find any Mauzer brass out here in the boonies, and NO, They do not need to be fireformed, Cast Bullet Kid is right, I tried trimming them first, and then found that it was easier to run them through the die, then I use a pumbers tubing cutter and take off about 3/8".  This inadvertently crimps the mouth some, so they need to go through the die again, then just trim to length as normal, I use a Lee Universal chuck in my drill press or a regular drill.  I would love to find a 'file proof case trimmer' for 8mm.  If you cut some of the necks a hair short, it isnt a problem, the brass will grow anyway.

Robert: Check RCBS for a file proof forming die/trimmer.  Only need one.  I have one in 6mm-284 and it is truly file proof.  Works great.

Hey all, thanks for the information.  I have found out through this that I can make 8x57 from 30-06 very easy.
1. I first just lubed them and ran them through the 8mm resizing die.
2. I then trimmed them using a drill chucked on to my rcbs hand cranked trimmer. The hack saw and pipe cutter worked, but not as fast.
3. Chamfered and deburred.
4. primed.
5. Loaded
6. Now I will go shoot them!
