Remington CDL SF in .257 Weatherby
« on: October 14, 2008, 04:33:34 AM »
Good Morning.

A recent search showed me that Remington has introduced a few Model 700 offerings in .257 Weatherby. Does anyone know if these barrels have the long or excessive throats that most Weatherby calibers are notorious for?

Thanks,
ScottD

I was wondering the same thing. I have a buddy that is trying to decide between a CDL and a Mark 5 UL. If anyone has a rang report, I would love to hear it.

My friend has a 257 that was made by someone and was reloading for it.  When I got him some factory ammo we were seeing all kinds of pressure problems with the cases.   We found out that your need the added free bore to shoot Weatherby factory ammo out of the the gun.  I will wager that Remington will add the excessive throat so Weatherby factory ammo can be used in the gun.
Just my $.02.  Hey how come it's a penny for your thoughts but you have to pay twice as much to tell others what you think.

I didn't get the CDL SF but do have the LSS limited edition gun issued this year only in .257 Whby Magnum. I've not even taken it out of the box so really can't say about the throating of it. Why not call Remington and ask if you are concerned about it.

The guy that finally found one for me tossed in a used set of RCBS dies someone had traded in to him and an old box of Weatherby factory ammo with 117 grain Hornady bullets. He said he couldn't sale such trade in ammo but after looking it over I'm 100% positive it's factory not reloads so will shoot it once I get my round tuit it take it out to shoot.

I'll set it up with Leupold Dual Dovetail base/rings and for now a Leupold VX-II 3-9 tho ultimately if it shoots as I expect it to I'll likely find a different scope with wider magnification range and most likely with side focus. The new Elite 6500 is very tempting.

Graybeard,
How many rifles do you have sitting in the vault that have not been shot?  Seems like every other thread you have one that you have not shot.
Either you have lot's of toys and no money to feed them and that's why they sit waiting to be played with or you just have too many irons in the fire to tend.
Not saying it's a bad thing.  I'm jelous.  ;)

I stopped in my favorite shop today to get a price on the CDL for my buddy. He lives a good ways from anywhere that might have one in stock. My shop quoted 850 for the CDL stainless but the distributer only had one in stock. They must be in pretty short supply. I told my buddy that he better act quickly if he wants one. I will let you know what he decides.

Remington typically adds utilizes a pretty good bit of freebore on higher-pressure cartridges or ones that are notorious for causing early throat erosion.  I sincerely doubt they can or will provide you with any actual measurements (proprietary information).  I would say that one of my rifles (a 7 Mag) had so much free bore that the bullet wouldn't come anywhere near the lands...but it still shoots under 1/2" with my handloads.  I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the freebore deal.

I haven't tried to take a count lately. I have quite a few I've not taken from the box yet handguns and rifles. I can afford to feed them I just have to make the time to do it. I really do have lots of irons in the fire and making time to do all I need to get done even tho I'm retired isn't easy. I'm way behind on my shooting so I reckon what I really should do is go buy a new gun so I won't think about it so much.  ;D

LOL.
Hey, you looking to adopt?   ;D
Actually with a new job and a new city I don't have the time to shoot like I did before and I have not found a place to shoot.  Although one of the members lives near by and has told me about a place.  Quail opens Sat and I will see about shooting targets next week.
I too have been kicking around the idea of a new rifle and have not narrowed it down yet.  I think I need to log off for a while and make a desicion.  The more I read the more new ideas keep popping into my pea brain.
A friend I shoot with retired and he complains that he now has more to do than when he worked full time.
