custom barrel question - problem
« on: October 01, 2008, 05:01:54 PM »
Went out to shoot my new  barrel today in a 35 whelen, but ran into a problem.  Hoping someone has the solution.  I was using Double Tap ammunition in a 200g bullet with a prohunter rifle.  I placed the first cartridge in the barrel and proceded to close it.  It ALMOST would close.  I figured maybe it's just a little tight given the new barrel, so tried to lightly "snap" the barrel closed a couple of times.  Then the bullet extracter won't eject the bullet and the barrel still won't seat.  I used a screwdriver to pry the case out (gunpowder falls out), but the bullet stayed in the barrel.  So I tap the bullet out with a cleaning rod (there goes $2).  I repeated the process with another cartridge (yes, bullet pulled out of the case again...$2) and then gave up.  SO...my question is...is the problem most likely with the bullet and I need to try another manufacturer...or is it more likely with the barrel and I need to send it back to the custom barrel maker???

Rusty,
I also have a new TC .35 whelen barrel but haven't shot it yet. I was also planning on trying the same double tap loads as you but had second thoughts about it. I heard that a co-worker of one of my buds had some problems with that load. He said it shot the bullet but the case was stuck in the chamber. This happened multiple times. I don't know whats going on. I would definitely call the barrel maker but different ammo may well be the ticket. Since I am using mine for deer and probably won't ever shoot past 200 yds. I am gonna try the plain old 200 gr. corlokts. Keep us posted!

Well either your chamber was cut to short (this happens WAY more than you would think) or the bullets are seated to far out for your barrel. I would measure the OAL of those bullets and take your caliper to the sporting goods store with you and measure several different types of ammo. If the OAL of most of those is similar to what you have already tried I would send the barrel back. You don't want a finicky barrel. If you are a reloader you could accommodate this problem (assuming its just A LITTLE shorter than most) but that's going to limit your case capacity. So slower velocities for you. Let us know what happens.

Well, it looks like it's the barrel.  It's not a TC barrel either.  I tried to chamber Remingtons in the barrel today with the same problem.  Called the barrel manufacturer and I'm shipping it back to let them take a look at it.

I have heard of Barrel makers doing that so factory ammo would shoot better beings the bullet would be closer to the lands.

The cartridge wouldn't even chamber, so I never even shot it it...I don't see how this could be better.  I sent the barrel back and the mfg is taking care of the problem.  I realize mistakes happen, so I'm not going to badmouth the mfg.
