Winchester WinLite 12 gauge target loads
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:39:30 AM »
I bought a few boxes of Winchester WinLite 12 gauge target loads this weekend for some recoil sensitive shooters. Shot charge is just under an ounce (26g) and velocity is about 900fps. Recoil and noise are claimed to be reduced by half. Shot size is #8

Interesting ammo. We shot some skeet with it, and did some rabbit hunting and shot a rabbit with it at about 30 yards.

Plusses:
1) Really does have very mild recoil and noise.
2) It works fine for clays.

Minuses:
1) Not really suitable for hunting ammo. The rabbit was solidly hit, but was wounded, although disabled. Stick with 7 1/2 shot and a field load, which works fine on rabbits at that range. I've never wounded a rabbit before. They have always died very quickly.

2) There's enough difference in velocity between this ammo and regular 1150fps target ammo to throw off my lead estimation in skeet. Stay with the velocity you are used to.

3) Very dirty burning. The bore of the shotgun was the dirtiest I've ever seen a shotgun bore. Truly enough soot to strike terror into the heart of even the most seasoned chimney sweep. (But it comes out easily, so it's mostly a cosmetic thing.)
Safety first

when shooting skeet I throw anything-whatever is cheaper- into the my beretta silver pigeon II (two barrel set 12 and 20) in #9 shot and I shoot anywhere from a 21 to a 25. Don't get so hung up on ammo for skeet. It all has to do with fit and technique.
