Recommended O/U shotguns
« on: May 25, 2008, 02:40:57 PM »
I'm in the market for a GOOD used O/U w/changeable chokes. Primary uses would be Trap shooting, pheasant and ruffed grouse hunting. I'd like to spend between $800 and $1000. I'm familliar with the Citoris and Ruger Red Labels.

What other quality brands/models might fall in that dollar range? I've looked at a used Charles Daly and a new CZ Redhead at a local dealer. Both are Huglus, which seem to be a crapshoot, so to speak. Is the CZ @ around $800 new a better quality of Huglu?

TIA
Dave

PS

I just bought a 98% 1979 vintage Remington 1100 Tournament Trap. Going to put that one on the wall. I have never owned a gun that I didn't hunt with or shoot regularly. I decided to make an exception when I saw this one.

A used Citori Trap is your best bet, and you should be able to find one in your price range.

I handled a red label it was a nice solid smooth shotgun...The only downside was the weight...It might be a good thing for shooting trap it won't batter your shoulder so bad...

In addition to the local ones, I've got 2 more that I'm evaluating. One is a used Citori White lightning for $950. The other is a used Lanber 2087 for $550. I know almost nothing about the Lanber, anybody have one or know anything about them? The Citori is a safe choice, but I have yet to see pics. The Lanber is intriguing, but an unknown. The Charles Daly is getting a new buttstock(the original one had a crack in the grip)from Charles Daly. Price is $385

Stoger makes a pretty good O/U.
The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

I've got a 20 gauge CZ Redhead (Huglu) that is my primary skeet gun. I bought it new and after many thousands of rounds it has performed flawlessly. It was a very tight gun when I first got it and it loosened up with use.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I just bought a new Weatherby Orion Upland.  It is made by SKB.  It's a great gun and it looks good.  Unfortunately I have to sell it die to some medical issues.  I haven't even fired it yet.  Anyway, they come with 3 choke tubes, skeet, imp and mod.  I bought mine from CDNN for $979

Fit, Fit, Fit.

All the ones mentioned are excellent guns (other than the durability of the Stoeger might be a question if you're going to shoot alot of trap, skeet, clays, etc.).

How does each one come up for you is the real question.

Good luck with it.
