Odd day at the range
« on: October 16, 2008, 04:45:04 PM »
Me and my daughter went to the range today with her 30-30 to make final adjustments before deer season. i shot first and the first 2 were under 1" at 100yds. she shot the next three at just over 1". seemed we were right there. i set up a full size deer target at 130yd. both of us were shooting and neither of us could get a group. I'm talking like 5-6" and all were high. dead on at 100yds and no grouping at 130yds. same loads, same bench rest, same everthing. let barrel cool, and shot a few as fast as i could. shot a few more back at the 100yd target and they were right back where we started.
anybody ever heard of this? ideas?

Did the full size deer target have an aim point? If it didn't, there's your reason, the old adage "aim small, miss small" isn't a myth. ;)

the target does have a aim point, actually it has two, and both are very visible. I laid awake trying to think of what was going on last night. the only difference is the 100yd target is straight down range from the bench. the 130yd target is about 20 degrees off to the left. you have to move the rest and contort your body some to line up the 130yd target. could this putting some sideways pressure on the forarm? and do you think that would cause the difference in POI?

I've had the point of impact change between 100 and 200 yards due to the parallex of the scope on cheaper scopes, I don,t know if that would be a factor from 100 to 130 yds.  Put the same target you were shooting at 100 yds at 130 yds and see how you shoot, sometimes your mind will mess with you when you go to bigger target and you don't focus as much as you would on a smaller target.

You could certainly be putting side pressure on the stock. Handis can be a bit finicky about where you put the bags or rest. I would Guess that if you lined up the target directly in front of you and put the rest in the same place as before, you will get the results that you want. Good luck with Deer season. I am going to make my first bow hunt this evening.

+1 on the rest being in a sligtly different position under the forend as you moved it to line up with the second target at 130 yards. If the rest were closer to the muzzle it could explain the change in POI. I've had lever actions do the same thing. Try shooting at both ranges with your hand under the forearm, or make a conscious effort to place the front rest in exactly the same spot. If your gun is sensitive to that, you may want to sight in with your hand between the forearm, and the bag anyway.
