Barrel Rack for the safe
« on: December 12, 2008, 06:51:44 AM »
I suppose most of you already have the problem of "how to store Contender/Encore barrels" whipped.  I do not take credit for this idea, saw it on another forum as a handgun rack.  But it looked like a good way to get my barrels in order and off the shelf/carpet a bit.  So I bought a couple of these at Wally-World last evening and sure enough, they worked in my situation.  I'm always struggling to make my safe "bigger" ;)

With a little "engineering" I believe a person could come up with a way to double-deck the barrel storage per rack...perhaps with some zip-ties or the like?

The racks are $3.95 (I think or there-bouts) and are for sale at Wally in the dish/sink items area.

Here are a couple pics.

You folks have been so helpful with suggestions and ideas, I thought I had better reciprocate a bit.

Bob

Bob, That ain't too shabby at all.  I think you catch up quick.  Mine is similiar but not as substantial....I may have to go to Wally World.  My problem is a S-14 barrel with much of a scope hanging over the breech end is longer than my safe is deep.  Thanks, Walt  ;D

Walt,
I guess that long barrel needs to sit like a rifle!  My longest is a Super 14.

i went into the fishing dept of my local gander mountain and bought 2 sets of the fishing pole holders that you can mount to the wall .they are black in color you can fit 6 barrels on each.that way i can store my barrels side by side on my shelf in my safe.i think they are made by plano. they have a dense foam in them to hold the barrels just my two cents worth dave.....

Thanks Bob.  Right after I read your post I went to Wally World and brought one of the racks.  It is exactly what I wanted.  It looks like it was designed for T/C barrels instead of dishes.  I think something 6" X 14" fairly stiff on top you could keep going up.  Thanks again.

Gabby,
Glad to toss the suggestion out there.  Mr. muffindrvr's idea is also a good one...mounting on the side makes great sense as it leaves more shelf space!

vonfatman,

This is a great idea! I have been trying to come up with something for my barrels...question answered.

Also, I noticed one of your barrels has a huge scope on it??? Just wondering what type of scope that was. It seems to be very large in diameter. It may just be the picture.....

blacknwhite,
It's no big whip...it's a cheap S&W scope I bought to install on that .22 LR barrel.  I just bought it to plink around with...it's not too bad...the cap seems to make the scope appear larger than it really is.

Glad the rack works for you.  Here's a pic taken today after some modifying earlier in the week...just used those handy zip-ties to make another level, then sat the top barrels facing the opposite direction.  So now I do not need two racks!  Saved some additional space.  Behind the rack are a different type rack (sold right next to the others @ Wally).  I placed them behind the Contender rack to get some scopes and Dan Wesson barrels up off the carpet.  Cheaper than buying a new safe, better than selling off "stuff" for new "stuff" to fit.

A second level.....it gets even better.

Thanks for replying about the scope. I thought it might be a night vision scope, they are very large in diameter as that one appears. I have been wanting one so I was going to bug you with questions.

Again great idea, thanks for sharing.

vonfatman,

What a great idea :D  I'm sure Santa can handle one of these at that price!

Merry Christmas,
