something like the SKS type rifle?
« on: October 28, 2008, 07:54:43 PM »
I've got a project in the back of my head that I've been wanting to do for a while.  I'm looking for a carbine type rifle with preferably removable box magazine and firing the 7.62x39.  Think an upgrage of the SKS with a synthetic pistol grip stock and removable mag and decent sights.

Is there somewhere that I can get a decent barrled action(prefere a chrome lined barrel) and just buy the stock or is there somebody making what I'm looking for?

My father bought an unissued Norinco SKS years ago and with a few mods it'd be perfect, but I haven't found one like it.  Wish I'd bought one at the same time.

My main concern is not getting a something that's half worn out, I'd prefer unissued or new if posible.

Any ideas?
Thanks

If it's a conversion kit you're looking for here is 1 link of hundreds available.

You may want to look into a Saiga.  It's been almost 3 years since the barrel ban on imports so sources are starting to dwindle on AKs.

Good Luck!

Excellent condition (some with new actions) Yugo SKS's are still available for around $300.

Is the Yugo the one without a chrome linned barrel?  Really looking for chrome linning, lots easier to clean.

Might give you some ideas. You know the sks can be converted for removeable mags right? There are still a very good supply of never issued ones floating around.
I don't know what your budget is but you can buid an AR 15 in 7.62x39.
You can get stripped lowers for $120 and up.

Of coarse it would be a lot cheaper in 223.

Thanks, what I would realy like to get my hands on is a good quality SKS bareled action in unissued condition with chrome linning, don't have clue where to get one.  What I've got in mind is to build a custom, and I'd hate to tear up a perfectly good new or like new SKS.  I don't know about the removable mags, only one I's seen is the Duck bill, is there a conversion or methoud out there that uses standard mags?
Thanks, Will

For detachable sks magazines have a look here, there is also an AK magazine conversion, but it is rather extensive.
http://www.simonov.net/magazines.htm
You can also buy stripper clips and load from the top with the factory non removable magazine.
If you're looking for accuracy, stock is generally around 3" groups.
With a glass bedded stock  or quality after market free floated from the receiver forward knock off a half inch.
Polished and lightened trigger (wolf springs) another half inch.
Chopping off the end of the barrel and re-crowning will drop another inch.
These were my results they may vary from gun to gun. Never heard of an aftermarket barrel by the way.

Will - if you are going to go through all that, why don't you just get yourself an American made AK (good solid receivers) with the longer barrel (sks length).  You can add on your choice of flash hider, change the wood and add a scope and all for probably less or about the same you would have wound up paying for all the accessories to a SKS.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

You can pick up Yugo SKSs around here for under 200, they are unissued witht the chrome lined barrells. Still one of the best deals going, aftermarket parts are abundant, but I don't like the removable mags.  If you want removable mags I'd really look hard at a Ak-47 they can be had for less than 400 dollars around here. and they'er mountains of parts for them.

The Yugo is not chrome-lined. My Russian one is chrome, but out of the 100+ guns I own, it's the only one that is. I don't find it all that much easier to clean than any of my non-chrome guns with good bores. The Yugos are about equal in quality to the Russians with their nicely machined parts; I'd take that over a stamped Norinco model, chrome or no chrome...

I saw a like new Norinco SKS in a Ramline stock at a local dealer, for $299.00.

More than I would pay.  The last NIB Norinco SKS I bought was $50.00.

As mentioned before there is NOT a single Yugoslavian SKS I am aware of in existence with a chrome lined barrel.  Period.  Unless of course someone put one on...Yugo never had one (that I am aware of)

Ok, also as mentioned above but I will share now my opinion.......you want a 7.62x39 with a pistol grip, semi auto, nice sights and to be real new and reliable?  Still made in Russia as just like Simonov is called a Kalashnikov.....AK-47.  A million AK options are available which fit your bill.  You'd be OTD for about $400

Ok, an SKS option for you since you asked and this seems to be your "pointed question".  I would recommend an SKS M or D which was made in China and is usually deemed Norinco....Yep Norinco is Ban from importation years ago and so you will pay a premium.  All Norinco I am aware of are Chrome lined barrels.  The SKS M and D version were impoted with the ability to accept AK mags as the feed.  Some conversions were done after hitting the shores so keep a good eye open.  An SKS M is essentially an AK-47 with an SKS operation system.   I'd sell my M model for about $400 (hmmmm just like a NEW AK) ...whoops edited to say I am NOT selling by the way.....not before an election ;)

Then from here as you want a Pistol Grip you would buy a new stock set or kit from somewhere (never looked personally) and I imagine a $129 bill right away.  Needs to be fitted as well and tweaked to work so add another $35 or so.  You are right into the $565 arena.  For a semi auto 7.62x39 that works well.  (sounds  like an AK to me but costs 165 more)

I will try for pics STOLEN from another site....they are not mine but depict an SKS M in a newer stock that looks like what you want.

My opinion (also in the 100+club) is to stick to you rlist of WANTS but to open the optoins past the SKS action.  Even though it is simple and reliable there are indeed more options.  I liked the reference to the Ar in x39 as well.  Very possible and in the same $$$ "range" (200 more??) as custom building your SKS.

Mikey, do you have a link to an american made AK?  I like the idea of removable mags and the longer barrel and a quality reciever.  My bigest dislike of the AK is that all I've handled have seem cheap and clunky and I don't like the short barrel, now if I could get my hands on one with a milled reciever, quality synthic stock and 20" barrel that would be ideal.

Thanks cbxboy, I love the SKS design, my father's SKS is a Norinco and while the fit and finish leave something to be desired I love how rugged and solid it is.

Thanks for everybodies help.

Will

Another option which is overlooked sometimes is the Saiga brand.  Made in Russia and imnported by Russian Americn Armory (currently---it was old EAA?)  Anyway I bought into a Saiga fo rte first time as it was a cheap bang-bang......problem is it is great.

I then bought a .308 with a 22" barrel and stuck a Leupold 3x9x40 on top.  Way fun and a nice shooter.

Not made in US but has a long barrel option and is affordable......$350 or less if x39 variant.

Thanks, I'll give Saiga a look, the one with the synthetic stock looks interesting.

Will....

Further thoughts......so I'm a pain!!!

The Saiga DOES feel sort of "cheap".  You can restock it in wood (added expense of course) and trick it up.  If you desire this I do feel it to be a fair value.  The options are really limitless if you have cash.  I like the Saiga Platform as it does offer a great deal of "options" to trick it out to your desire and still maintain a long barrel and an AK based action.

For clarity on my above post.  My Saiga in 7.62x39 was around $220 and hte .308 was around $350 by memory....I can't recall.  I know both OTD with taxes was around $580..... a few years back though.

You really have unlimited options at your avail.   Its a question of money really.  A long Barreled DPMS Ar based rifle in 7.62x39 would be cool.....and run around $1500 I SUPPOSE (have no real clue) for a nice tricked out one.  At that price I'd do a .308 though :):)

Have fun and design whatever it is you would like to have in the end.
