Choices for up comming hunt
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:10:21 PM »
I am going on a Javilina hunt in Feb.  The area is real deep ravines that are at best 200 yard shots.  I want a light rifle and have the following choices.
A- get a new scope for my Ruger 77/22H in 22 Hornet.  I am thinking of a 3-9X38 Weaver.  It wears a 6-18 Bushnell now and is really too big for the rifle.  I took it with me last year and it was OK but the 6X low end was a little too much.
B- Get a 223 barrel and stock kit for the Contender. and mount a 2-7X33 Weaver Scope on it.
C- Buy a new CZ 527 Carbine in 223. and use the open sights.
D- A new CZ 527 American with a 3-9X38 Weaver Scope.
Now for the hard part.  Why? Would you pick that set up.
BTW I have a Remington M700 SPS in the Kevlar stock and a 6-24X42 Weaver scope on it and will not need a long range varmint rifle for later and a M700 V in .308 with a 3-9x50 Leupold Var X II.  This rifle will be a walk around preditor and Javilina gun only.  I also am not exactly happy with the small ctg in the medium action and that is why I am leaning to the CZ 527 action in the 223 rounds.

If you were going to purchase a new CZ I would go with a higher caliber such as a 25-06 or at least a .243. Both are good flat shooting calibers that can also be used for other larger game.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Val,
Thanks, but I have a couple other rifles that fit that bill.  I am looking for only a walk around medium game rifle for Javilina.  I think the 223 with 55 to 64 grain bullet will work fine.  My friend took one last year with a 22-250.  The problem we all have is where we are hunting is a lot of steep hills and a lite short rifle would be welcome when headed back up the hills.  I was thinking of a
Ruger M77 compact in 308 win with a 1.25-4 X 28 Trijicon scope but I have a pair of 308's and a 30-06 that will work fine but why do I want to carry the extra 2 to 3 pounds in rifle and ammo?
The CZ 550 is a great rifle but it is a long action and I want one, but in a larger calier like 9.3X62 but that is later on.  I have 2 months to figure out what I am going to use, buy ammo, get it sighted in, and get some more range time where I can shoot in multiple positions at different ranges.

308 for a Javilina?  These are tiny little things, a 17 Remington is more than you need, the Hornet you have is the best on the list.  If you want a different rifle go with a 204 Ruger, that would be over kill.  I have a Handi rifle in 17 Remington Fireball, which is what I would take.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

The CZ 527 would get my vote, I kinda like that new M1 .223 With the short magizine. the .204 is worth a look also.

I really like the light quick handling of the CZ carbines, I have one in 7.62x39, quick to the shoulder and on target fast. easy to carry also.

I also have the CZ varmiter very nice but a little to much to walk around with all day, the carbine would be better.
