Savage 110 problem

Good afternoon folks!  First time poster with an issue I need help with.  My brother has a Savage 110 in .30-06 that he purchased new in 1986.  This rifle has been a tack driver for him, but it has recently developed a problem that causes him to leave it at home.  Recently, he has been experiencing light primer hits.  He blames the ammo, I'm leaning towards a firing pin/spring problem.  Can anyone tell me what the OAL length should be for the firing pin, or could it be something else?  Thanks for all the help!

Factory ammo or reloads?

If factory is the problem from multiple brands not just one?

If it reloads, could be the primer not seated properly.

First thing I do when a gun does this is take the bolt apart and clean the inside, the spring, and the fireing pin good, and depending on temps the rifle might be used in relubeing with light oil or silicone.

A Savage gunsmith (BillPA) on the Savage Shooter's forum, says the proper way to adjust everything is to "set the protrusion to .035"-.040" then adjust the cocking piece for about .005" clearance between the cocking piece pin and the bottom of the cocking ramp."

How are these adjustments made is there provisions inside the bolt?   :)

+1 on cleaning the bolt inside and out. It is the first thing to check IMHO. What has changed? Probably nothing. Crud can build up inside the bolt slowing down the firing pin or stopping it from moving forward as far as it should. 2nd thing to check if that is not the problem is a weak firing pin spring. Welcome! Until this week I had never stripped a bolt down. I am changing calibers on a Savage so I had to change the bolt head. Do not fear stripping the bolt down, it is very easy( not a Geico commercial but..) As has been said, it sounds very much like a bolt cleaning will do the trick.
