Left right groups with Outback
« on: August 28, 2008, 03:52:31 AM »
I am going crazy trying to address left right grouping issues with my LH Outback.  I know it is me, but I cannot get it worked out.  I can shoot a good group anytime I pick up the bow, but some days it is 4-5" to the right of center at 20 yards.  The next day it can be right back at center...day after 4-5" right.  Can always put 3 arrows right on top of each other in this varying location.

It is driving me crazy.

Any suggestions appreciated.  I have worked on back tension and hand grip.  I thinned my Matthews standard grip and thay helped tighten my groups...but still not fixed the L-R thing.

I will add I have also worked on my release and again that has tightened my groups, but I expect the L-R thing must be a grip issue.

Help!

Thanks.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

RF,
First off I need to tell ya I ain't no expert!  I am left handed and a relatively new bowhunter. I had to decide how I'm gonna hold the bow and stick with it. If I put a death grip on the bow, I shoot left. If I try to do the open hand style, like my youngun, I shoot right. If I hold the bow with my entire hand, without the deathgrip....THUNK! Dead center! I had to tighten my bow strap just a bit too.

Another thing to consider is your peep. Is it coming back exactly the same way, to the same place, everytime? If it's canted one way or the other, or ya have to move your head around to find it, this is gonna cause ya to shoot off too.

I am relatively new to bow shooting... I have had the same frustrations but after talking to friends who shoot i found something that works for me...
when i shoot i make sure i hold the bow the exact same way every time
i put my my knuckle on my release hand in the lobe of my ear
i center the peep in the middle of my sight window then put the appropriate pin on the target (not the peep centered on the pin)

The real way to fix it is practice practice practice....I'm sore from shooting right now

Try shooting open hand and the more anchor points the better ... oh, and shooting a few thousand arrows dont go astray either :)

If you close both eyes and draw and then open them and see what sight picture you have will give you a good idea of what you may be doing without realizing it.

I think I might have the quick fix for ya, try a stick on bubble level and put it on your sight so you can see it trough your peep.  I had the same problem years ago and it fixed me.  My current sight has one built in.

If it is a grip issue or and anchor issue this should show you the days you are doing it and not.  After using it for a while it will be second nature and if you are off you will quickly see why.

I shoot a RH Outback and if I put a death grip on it, it shoots to one side or the other.  I recently added a kisser button and it really help tightened up my groups as well.

open hand is the way to go.  I just barely touch my index finger to my thumb, so mine is not technically open hand but the same concept of loose grip applies.
