1911 grips
« on: December 11, 2008, 05:17:43 AM »
I'm not sure if everyone likes these but i'm hooked on the full wrap around rubber grips on my 1911 and other handguns too.  The gun just doesn't slip in my hand at all. I have a firmer grip on it.

A whiole back i purchased the IAI full wrap around rubber grips at www.cdnninvestments.com these were around $8.  And there just as good as the hogue rubber grips are.  I also used the IAI national match barrel bushing too.  IAI (Israel)

It could be my hands are going soft too since i been retired,  plus i wear leather gloves all the time now since my hands are more tender.  My hands were always like sandpaper before.

Naw, don't care for those grips, especially on a 1911. I like the thin grips, either wood, or the faux bone ones. With the bulky rubber grips I'm forced to change my grip to operate the mag release. The grips are usually too tacky to do so easily. As I don't pratice much, when drawing I occasionally get a bad grip on the gun. It's very difficult to shift my grip on the draw with the rubber ones. Plus-----------I like my grips to look good too ! ;)

I agree with Savage. Some grips are Yummy and some are Dadgummy ugly.
Please ignore the poetic licence.

I like thin grips. Just bought a set of Alumagrips Tacticals. I really like them. Not cheap but they feel great in your hand. They have both thin and normal.

Pachmyer makes several types of 1911 grips. Some have checkered rubber on the front strap. Some have thumb ledges. The best has no swells or ledges and has a scallop by the mag button for better access. I had my front strap checkered and cut the rubber away. I REALLY like it.

I do want to try those laminated wood ultra thin grips on my 1911 and the grips at www.nill-griffe.com

I ordered a pair of grips once for my 357mag ruger revolver ( the trooper gun stocks with finger grooves).  I think they were from Herrett and i had to draw my hand on a piece of paper and send it to them.  The grips fit my hand perfectly. I wonder if they do that for 1911's too.

www.herrettstocks.com/new.htm

There fancy for revolvers but nothing special for the auto's.

I have some scrap wood from my sons cabinet shop and i may try making a set of grips.  I have some wicked birds eye maple and some black walnut.

I do have a set of houge on my sig 239 that came with it, I dont like the factory grips that come from Sig so I guess you could say I like these as I almost carry it everyday, with a few exceptions I do give some of the others a little attention, wouldn't want none of them to get jealous.   Jim

That is a good thought.
The Sigs are pretty wide bodied and it is hard too find grips for them, The Hogue's are about as small as you can get.
For my 1911 styles---well, I , er, well---I like a little sexiness in those grips. Small and slender, like putting you hand around your loves waist and dancing cheek too cheek.
I digress

No wrap around for me.  I have a pair of herrett skip checks on one colt and Chip McCormack thin-lines on my LT commander.  As a matter of fact, I also have Craig Speigel thin lines on my 9mm HP and another brand of thin lines on my 40cal HP.

Hogue makes a standard style set of grips called Palm Swell. They are rubber & have a small swell to them that fits your palm. Catchy name, huh? Anyway, these are my standard grips on all of my 1911's. Well except for the High Standard that I use for HD. It has a set of wood grips that my favorite gunsmith made. I tried the wrap-around finger grove ones, but didn't like them on the 1911. I do use them on my two revolvers, though.

One other point is with any handgun we need to get a grip that feels right for us too.  Thats the whole battle the gun has to fit our hand and feel good.

I have a set of Hogue finger groove grips on my S.A.
1911. I love them. They fit my hand just right. I don't
shoot in competition or anything other than punching
paper with it once in a while and occasionally plinking
with it and they work out fine for me.

One other way to go is my son is a cabinet maker and they throwout all kinds of exotic wood in all sizes and thickness's.(cutoff scrap wood) I been thinking of making my own wood grips someday when i get the time.  I have birdseye maple, blackwalnut, cherry ect. to play with.

He might contact some of the wooden grip makers to see if they want to buy his scraps.

He gives me the scrap wood for kindly for the woodstove.  I put the good stuff a side to save it from the fire.
